City of Chemnitz founds municipal construction company

The city of Chemnitz will establish a municipal construction company to realise municipal construction projects. This was decided by the city council today. The future "KommunalBau Chemnitz GmbH" is to be a wholly owned subsidiary of Grundstücks- und Gebäudewirtschafts-Gesellschaft mbH (GGG).

The aim is to provide additional processing capacities for construction coordination in order to support the City of Chemnitz in the preparation and implementation of municipal construction and infrastructure measures, particularly in the school and daycare centre sector. As before, planning and construction services are to be awarded to appropriate planning offices and private construction companies through tenders.

A further four primary schools and three secondary schools are to be built or refurbished by 2024. In total, the city plans to invest around 120 million euros in the new school locations in order to respond to the rising number of pupils. These and other projects already planned mean that the city's capacities for construction preparation and supervision are largely tied up. The new company is intended to remedy this situation so that the planned measures can be realised on schedule.

Synergy effects are to be achieved by linking the company to the municipal subsidiary GGG. With the founding of "KommunalBau Chemnitz GmbH", the city of Chemnitz is following numerous examples from other large municipalities that have successfully realised larger investment projects with the help of municipal subsidiaries.
