City of Chemnitz finances educational trips to concentration camp memorials
Grant for pupils in grades 8 to 11 at Chemnitz secondary schools and grammar schools
The city of Chemnitz is now funding an educational trip to a concentration camp memorial site for all Chemnitz pupils at secondary schools, special schools and grammar schools in grades 8 to 11. The educational trips to these memorials have so far taken place, for example, as part of history lessons or in the run-up to the Jugendweihe. As a rule, the costs are borne by the parents. The funding provided by the City of Chemnitz enables all young people to take advantage of such an offer - regardless of their families' financial situation. The aim is to enable every young person in Chemnitz of the specified age to go on such a trip once. A sum of 30 euros per pupil is available for this purpose.
Mayor Barbara Ludwig: "Anyone who has ever visited a concentration camp sees and feels impressively what people are capable of, where right-wing populism and fascism have led. And anyone who experiences this oppressive place with an open heart recognises their personal responsibility to ensure that something like this must never happen again.
There are fewer contemporary witnesses who can tell future generations about the horrors they experienced. But education about the Holocaust must not end. We are therefore taking responsibility, enabling all young people in Chemnitz to visit and hope to provide teachers with support for their demanding work in teaching history in a vivid way."
