At the workshop, qualified teacher Maria Jentsch will present brain-linking exercises for a successful, joyful start to school, improved concentration and memory performance. Reading books from the city library's first reading shelf will be integrated. The aim is to give you practical exercises for everyday life so that you and your child can optimally master the challenges of everyday school life. You will also receive the matching bookmark with the mascot "Köpfchen" for self-determined children who are strong learners, which shows the five most important starting exercises.

What connects Jews and non-Jews in Germany after 1700 years of Jewish life in Germany? After all the breaks and disruptions, awareness has grown of how much of our cultural self-image is due to the successful work of Jewish women and men: in the field of artistic education as well as in the fields of science and philosophy, politics and philosophy.
The Jewish psychologist Barbara Traub and the Protestant religious scholar Michael Blume describe the cultural impulses and Jewish personalities that particularly fascinate them, including Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn, Fanny Arnstein, Rahel Varnhagen, Max Liebermann, Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler, Victor Frankl, Albert Einstein, Bertha Pappenheim, Rosa Luxemburg, Hannah Arendt, Jeanne Hersch, Martin Buber and Karl Popper.

The internet is overflowing with information. But which of it can I believe? How can I recognise a reputable source and how can I be on the safe side and not fall for so-called fake news?
We want to talk about all this in the workshop and develop strategies to counter fake news and disinformation and familiarise ourselves with the basics of fact checks. We will talk about news, useful digital platforms and your open questions. Feel free to come along and bring your own device, if you have one, so that we can explore and discuss the various options together.

Flowers for the underdog - reading for Rainer Klis on his 70th birthday
Venue: TIETZ, Neue Sächsische Galerie

With Katja Lange-Müller, Hans Brinkmann and Ralph Grüneberger and music by Helmut "Joe" Sachse.
Once again, Klis serves up bottomless stories. The hearty narrator loves his Saxon hillbillies, who have no greater desire than to escape the confines of their stifled existence. That's why they cherish the dream of great freedom, whatever the cost. This also applies to the desperate Rudi, who is desperate to finally get his relatives, exes and editors off the hook.
Rainer Klis, born in Karl-Marx-Stadt in 1955, made a name for himself as an author of short prose during his time in the GDR after studying at the Leipzig Literature Institute. After reunification, he became a world traveller and published a series of travel reports in addition to short story collections and novels. He died in Chemnitz in October 2017.

Reading and discussion on the topics of adoption, foster families and FASD
Malou Berlin reads from her novel "Was bleibt"

Malou Berlin has been dealing with the topics of foster families and adoption since her youth. In "Was bleibt" she tells a clever, perspective-rich and tragicomic family story about a foster child diagnosed with FASD (brain damage due to maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy).
Author Malou Berlin has published two novels and numerous short stories. Her film work has won her the Diversity Award of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and nominations for the Grimme Prize and the Prix Europa. Malou Berlin lives in East Brandenburg.
In the subsequent discussion, Caritas employee Mrs Seidel from the foster parent recruitment service will be available to provide information and answer questions.
There will be a reading session for children parallel to the event.

"My Way: A life between worlds" - Andrej Hermlin reads from his autobiography

To mark the concert by Andrej Hermlin and his Swing Dance Orchestra on 6 October at the Stadthalle, we are inviting the youngest son of writer and Holocaust survivor Stephan Hermlin to read from his autobiography. Andrej Hermlin grew up differently from other GDR children of his generation. Accompanied by his father, he enjoyed privileges, was allowed to travel and see the world, meeting famous poets such as Pablo Neruda, Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Max Frisch and Heinrich Böll. As a result, he was often the target of hostility at school. Music was an escape for him. When he discovered his enthusiasm for the melodies of Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller and decided to become a musician, an unusual life was inevitable. Today he is "the German ambassador of American swing" (Die Welt).
