"Charlottes Volkshaus"
Petra Pansch reads from the 3rd volume of her biographical-historical novel
Venue: TIETZ, event hall

The story of the novel, which is based on true events, is set around the Chemnitz Volkshaus in Zwickauer Straße. The main character is Charlotte, the grandmother of author Petra Pansch. On 11 May 1945, a historic moment takes place right next to the Volkshaus, with white flags waving from its windows. A convoy of US Army vehicles meets soldiers from the 1st Ukrainian Reconnaissance Unit with tanks and heavy equipment. The war is over. But not quite. The first days, weeks and months of supposed peace do not feel like peace, but are characterised by hunger, deprivation and the continued struggle for survival. The author describes in her own impressive way how Charlotte and her family manage to adapt to the new reality and how their lives continue.

Pen & Paper - introduction to role-playing and communication games / games meeting

We will get to know this unique mix of board game, storytelling and improv theatre without much prior knowledge. There are no limits to your imagination when role-playing with pen, paper and dice. Don't be afraid of daunting rules, but good communication is the be-all and end-all here. This can be practised well with lots of small, beginner-friendly role-playing games and other communication games. More experienced people will find like-minded people and can try their hand at one-shot adventures.

Refugee talks, scenic reading

Bertolt Brecht wrote the play "Flüchtlingsgespräche" (Refugee Conversations) in exile, which addressed the problems of emigrants who were expelled from Germany from 1933 onwards and the state of Germany. The title was adopted by Inge and Stefan Heym for a dense text that emerged from conversations with exiles from the GDR in 1989. Their motives are as different and varied as the GDR itself was and was perceived. Inge and Stefan Heym visited them in the reception camp for GDR refugees in Giessen on 29 and 30 September 1989. 35 years later, these texts are also a document about the conditions in the late GDR, just a few weeks before its end, something that no one seriously thought about at the time. Excerpts from these conversations will be presented in a staged reading.

At the workshop, qualified teacher Maria Jentsch presents brain-linking exercises for a successful and enjoyable start to school, improved concentration and memory performance. Reading books from the city library's first reading shelf will be integrated. The aim is to give you practical exercises for everyday life so that you and your child can optimally master the challenges of everyday school life. You will also receive the matching bookmark with the mascot "Köpfchen" for self-determined children who are strong learners, which shows the five most important starting exercises.

We present our brand new Comics Plus App - you can get free access to 20,000 manga and comics in English with your library card. Manga, Manhwa, Manhua: From Japan to Korea to China - the library explores different comics from East Asia and finds differences and similarities in these genres.
- Online workshop with the German mangaka Christina Plaka
We stream live to mangaka Christina, do a Q&A session and sketch, create storyboards and exchange ideas. Christina has also published a book entitled "Ich bin Mangaka!". We are offering three of these books as a gift to participants.

- Co-operative gaming for manga/comic fans
The library's gaming team will play simple and not-so-simple games with you, where co-operation is key. We will take a short break from gaming with a presentation of the new Comics Plus app.
- Workshop with ARTaround: Digital art: creating manga using a tablet and the drawing software "Krita". Our library lab partner Sebastian Nikolitsch from Kaffeesatz e.V. will guide interested parties through this programme.
- 3D print your own cosplay accessories: we provide the materials, you have the ideas and time (the library has its own 3D printer, but will borrow others from Kraftwerk e.V. and/or the local FabLab)
- "Manga-ise" yourself: You are the hero of your own manga! Our partner Kraftwerk e.V. will take a photo of you and together we will create a manga cover in an instant using AI, no drawing skills required.
- Bring a white T-shirt and a bag and print out your favourite manga art, the Stadtfabrikanten will help you.
- Free manga/samples from various publishers

Yevhen Polozhiy: Finaler Akt
Bilingual reading and discussion (Ukrainian and German) with the author.

The Ukrainian novel was written in 2024 and is based on true events, describing the centuries-old history of the struggle between Russia and Ukraine. It also describes the fate of German colonists in the USSR.
Most of the action takes place in Mariupol in February/March 2022. The main character of the novel is a Protestant priest whose ancestors are of Polish origin. All the main characters have real-life role models. Some of the characters live in Chemnitz today.
The novel was presented at international literary festivals and recognised as one of the ten best novels of Ukraine 2024. It will be presented by the author Yevhen Polozhiy in a bilingual presentation.

Workshop "JelGi - Everyone learns guitar"

Educational professionals, teachers and senior carers can learn in just a few lessons how to easily accompany children's and folk songs, popular songs and songs without any prior knowledge. The strings of the guitar are tuned to C major so that only one fingering needs to be learnt with the left hand. There are many fingerings for the right hand. There are also tips for JelGi music-making with guitars, boomwhackers and Orff instruments with children from the age of 2, senior citizens and people with disabilities.
The non-profit association "JelGi - Jeder lernt Gitarre" organises the JelGi courses on a voluntary basis.
