Dresden, 1784: Since her mother has disappeared, Luise has been helping her father, a fisherman, with his work. They watch anxiously as the ice masses build up on the Elbe. Conrad, a geographer, has similar worries. When a couple of children get caught between the ice floes, Luise has to watch as Conrad risks his life to save the boys. The two immediately feel a special connection. Then the ice breaks up, masses of water shoot downstream - and in all the disaster, Luise and Conrad are torn apart.

Birgit Jasmund, born in 1967, comes from near Hamburg. After studying law in Kiel, life took her to Dresden. When the wind is really blowing in your face there, nothing can keep her indoors. Born in the GDR, grew up in reunified Germany. When the Wall falls, Stine is just three years old. But the family is deeply entangled. Into a system that she cannot let go of and into the belief that she has lived the right life. With captivating clarity and boldness, Anne Rabe tells the story of a generation whose origins are a blank space. Anne Rabe, born in 1986, is a playwright, screenwriter and essayist. Her theatre plays have won several awards. As a screenwriter, she was part of the cult series "Warten auf'n Bus". For several years, she has also appeared as an essayist and lecturer on coming to terms with the past in East Germany. Anne Rabe lives in Berlin. A joint event organised by the Neue Sächsische Galerie and Chemnitz City Library.

Wild Kazakhstan - reading and beamer show with Carmen Rohrbach

Carmen Rohrbach is one of today's best-known travel writers. She was born in Bischofswerda and grew up in Freyburg an der Unstrut. After an escape attempt and two years in prison, she was released from the GDR and worked at the Max Planck Institute in Seewiesen. She has now travelled almost half the world, always alone, at most accompanied by a dromedary, horse or donkey. She was born with the adventure gene, as well as a wanderlust and a longing for new experiences and encounters. Carmen Rohrbach travelled to Kazakhstan together with her brother Holger. While he travelled with Kazakh hunters in search of ibex during the day, Carmen Rohrbach roamed the mountains alone. She gives a captivating account of her experiences and encounters, of bears, bearded vultures, admiral butterflies and snakes. At the same time, she and her brother reminisce intensely about their childhood, Carmen's escape and how she had to leave her family behind for many years.

After the Nobel Prize winners Thomas Mann, Gerhart Hauptmann and Paul Heyse, Hans Pleschinski's new novel "Der Flakon" is dedicated to the two poets Johann Christoph Gottsched and Christian Fürchtegott Gellert. At the request of the wife of the exiled Saxon Prime Minister Brühl, they are to poison the Prussian King Frederick, who has just invaded Saxony without any declaration of war, during an audience ... Full of fabulousness, excitingly amusing and extremely entertaining and knowledgeable, Hans Pleschinski tells this little-known, perhaps only invented, but in any case still highly topical chapter of German history and proves once again that he is one of the authors of our time.

At the invitation of the Chair of Modern German and Comparative Literature at Chemnitz University of Technology in cooperation with the City Library, Hans Pleschinski will read from his new novel and enter into dialogue with the audience as part of the "Literature and Knowledge" series.

Carmen Rohrbach: Longing for distance

Carmen Rohrbach has dedicated four decades to her expeditions, which have taken her to remote parts of the world - always alone, at most accompanied by a dromedary, horse or donkey. Her latest projector show tells of her childhood and youth in the GDR and presents her favourite travel experiences: on the Galapagos, in Yemen and Iceland, with the indigenous people of Palawan (Philippines) and with the Maasai. In the meantime, the biologist and well-known travel writer has explored almost half the world. Born in Bischofswerda, she grew up in Bautzen and Freyburg an der Unstrut. After an escape attempt and two years in prison, she was released from the GDR and later worked at the Max Planck Institute Seewiesen.
