On Older People's Day, we cordially invite you to find out about the wide range of opportunities in Chemnitz. From leisure activities, commitment, exercise programmes and all the important information on pensions, care, health, mobility and safety. A large number of Chemnitz stakeholders will present themselves and their work, providing an opportunity to exchange ideas and be inspired. Postmigrant youth moves the East - opening of the travelling exhibition
Location: TIETZ, Foyer

Young migrant people and BI_PoC in East Germany are often overlooked, ignored and forgotten. Consciously and unconsciously. Despite all this, many of them are loud; they network and get involved.
As part of the exhibition Trotz allem! Postmigrant Youth Moves the East, nine young (post-)migrant and BI_PoC initiatives and individuals talk about their political, civic and cultural engagement in Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.
Young role models from different communities are independently creating spaces for socialisation, empowerment and social change. They break with prejudices, old patterns and racist images. They tell unvarnished stories about the challenges they face in everyday life, on stage, in clubs and in local politics. Their stories give courage and hope and show how self-confident and persistent young migrants and BI_PoC in East Germany are.
The exhibition was created as part of the project "Competence Network for Living Together in the Migration Society" by DaMOst e. V. with the support of the German Foundation for Commitment and Volunteering and the Heidehof Foundation.

Pen & Paper - introduction to role-playing and communication games / games get-together

We will get to know this unique mix of board game, storytelling and improv theatre without much prior knowledge. There are no limits to your imagination when role-playing with pen, paper and dice. Don't be afraid of daunting rules, but good communication is the be-all and end-all here. This can be practised well with lots of small, beginner-friendly role-playing games and other communication games. More experienced people will find like-minded people and can try their hand at one-shot adventures.

Chemnitz picks up the pen!

The writing workshop "Rummelplatz" presents its interim results in a reading for the first time. Since April 2024, 22 writers have been meeting under the direction of Arna Arley to work on their own texts. The Capital of Culture project is based at the opera house and also includes a world premiere and an academic conference.

Book presentation with Ellen Schaller from the Chemnitz cabaret theatre

Doing is like wanting, only more blatant. In her two interview books, cabaret artist Ellen Schaller wanted to find out from fifty people each what their favourite and secret places in Chemnitz are, what they love about their city, what improvements they would like to see in Chemnitz and what ideas, dreams and visions they have for their city. The interviewees represent all age groups in a wide variety of professions. The result is two touching books with very personal stories from Chemnitz personalities such as Ingrid Mössinger, Peter Seifert, Nancy Gibson and Andreas Zweigler.

Longing for faraway places - reading and picture show with Carmen Rohrbach

In a multimedia reading, the well-known travel writer tells of her childhood and youth in the GDR in pictures and words. In the picture show that follows, Carmen Rohrbach shows her favourite travel experiences: the Galapagos Islands, Yemen, Iceland, getting to know the indigenous people of Palawan in the Philippines and the Maasai in Africa.
Carmen Rohrbach, who holds a doctorate in biology, is one of the best-known travel writers of our time. Born in Bischofswerda and raised in Bautzen and Freyburg an der Unstrut, she was expelled from the GDR after an escape attempt and two years in prison and completed her doctorate at the Max Planck Institute in Seewiesen. In the meantime, she has travelled almost half the world, always alone, at most accompanied by a dromedary, horse or donkey. She was born with the adventure gene, as well as a wanderlust and a longing for new experiences and encounters.

Lino is unhappy with his job: he is supposed to entertain children as a cat in a plush costume. But they just annoy him. When Lino loses his flat, his neighbour, who has always annoyed him at school, helps him. It is clear that the neighbour is up to no good: he is a thief and uses Lino's costume as a disguise.

A winter in British Columbia. Immerse yourself in the wild beauty of Canada, away from civilisation, in an area largely untouched by humans.
With this adventure, travel writer Carmen Rohrbach has fulfilled a long-cherished dream: She spent several months living in a simple wooden house on a lake with crystal-clear water, surrounded by rugged mountains. She gives a captivating account of the preparations and difficulties of her adventure. She describes how she explored the wilderness on extensive hikes and finally experienced the winter in complete isolation at temperatures as low as minus 48 degrees, without meeting a single person. In a captivating way, she shares her intense experiences and perceptions, her observations of nature and her thoughts with us.

Unusual mother-daughter relationship - Josefine Soppa reads from her debut novel "Mirmar"

In "Mirmar", mother and daughter keep their heads above water by subletting their flats, working digital temp jobs and using a massage table. Until the mother disappears one day. The daughter suspects she is on a stretch of beach by the sea, where she is supposed to be living with other women in accommodation run by former package holiday providers. She sets off on a search. On her journey, she remembers her mother, her fears and longings, the precarious, fragile life that she faced with great courage and encounters a movement of women who come together in a collective by the sea and try out a life beyond care work, poverty in old age and experienced inequality. An atmospheric debut and a tender portrait of mother and daughter, whose impact gradually seeps in.
Josefine Soppa, born in Oberhausen in 1988, lives in Leipzig. She studied Philosophy of the Arts and Media in Dresden and Hildesheim. In 2020, she received the open mike prose prize and was a scholarship holder of the Jürgen Ponto Foundation.

The film "Farewell and Arrival" documents the preparations for the transfer of the library from Heym's study in Berlin-Grünau to the Stefan Heym Forum in his native city of Chemnitz. Supplemented by numerous archive recordings from contemporary appearances and interviews with Stefan Heym, director Beate Kunath has succeeded in creating a sensitive double portrait that offers surprising new insights into Heym's life and literary work.

Ellen Schaller slips into eight different roles between the ages of 19 and 99. She talks about the alternative pension lottery, funeral trips instead of coffee trips, the 85 plus generation and cruises as a fountain of youth. Under the motto: Don't grow old gracefully, stay indecently young!
Are you already at that age when you're tying your shoes and wondering what else you could do now that you're down? We all can't stop ourselves from getting old, but we can make sure we have fun doing it.

The time has finally come! The new mobile library, an electric-powered vehicle, will be rolling through the streets of Chemnitz from November. The mobile library will be available at schools and public stops under the name FaBi. In addition to borrowing media, the service will include gaming, games and reading aloud as well as easy Internet access. We cordially invite all Chemnitz residents to take a look at the new vehicle and its possibilities for themselves.
