Exhibition: Despite everything! Postmigrant youth moves the East
Location: TIETZ Chemnitz, Foyer
Young migrant people and BI_PoC in East Germany are often overlooked, ignored and forgotten. Consciously and unconsciously. Despite all this, many of them are loud; they network and get involved.
As part of the exhibition Trotz allem! Postmigrant Youth Moves the East, nine young (post-)migrant and BI_PoC initiatives and individuals talk about their political, civic and cultural engagement in Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.
Young role models from different communities are independently creating spaces for socialisation, empowerment and social change. They break with prejudices, old patterns and racist images. They tell unvarnished stories about the challenges they face in everyday life, on stage, in clubs and in local politics. Their stories give courage and hope and show how self-confident and persistent young migrants and BI_PoC in East Germany are.
The exhibition was created as part of the project "Competence Network for Living Together in the Migration Society" by DaMOst e. V. with the support of the German Foundation for Commitment and Volunteering and the Heidehof Foundation.

From Leipzig to Belgrade, from the GDR to the People's Republic of Yugoslavia, from screen spectacles to adventure novels. Relentless and fast-paced, "The Projectors" tells of our present being crushed by the past - and of incomparable characters: in the Velebit Mountains, a former partisan experiences the adventurous filming of the Winnetou films. Decades later, the brutal battles of the Yugoslavian wars take place in these very places - in the midst of it all, a group of young right-wing radicals from Dortmund experience the futility of their ideology. And in Leipzig, the texts of a former patient are discussed at a conference in a psychiatric clinic: How did he manage to disappear without a trace? Was he able to predict the future? And what links him to the world traveller Dr May, who was also once a patient at the clinic?

Panel discussion: "Should I stay or should I go? When living in East Germany is (im)possible"

If you live in East Germany, you've probably asked yourself at least once: should I stay or should I go? It's not just right-wing movements that make (survival) in East Germany difficult; well-paid jobs are also rare.
This is a panel about displacement, hope and self-realisation. We bring together people with different realities of life: they were either born in East Germany or have migrated, belong to different generations, live in a small or large city... But they all have these questions in common: What is it worth staying for? What gives courage? What scares people? And when is it just Exit East Germany?
This event has been organised in cooperation between (K)Einheit, Jugendstil* and the Competence Network for Coexistence in the Migration Society as well as the Chemnitz City Library. It accompanies the exhibition "Despite everything! Postmigrant youth moves the East" by the Competence Network for Cohesion in the Migration Society, a project by DaMOst e.V. and Jugendstil*, a project by Bürger für Bürger Stiftung.

Stefan Heym was elected to the German Bundestag in 1994 as a non-party member of parliament for the Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS). As the oldest member of parliament, he was responsible for opening its constituent session. His speech as the oldest member of parliament, which was received extremely coolly by the representatives of the governing parties at the time, is now regarded as one of the great speeches in the history of the German parliament. Even 30 years later, it still proves to be highly topical.

Film screening and discussion: Hating Peter Tatchell

For almost six decades now, Peter Tatchell, one of the most important human rights activists of our time, has been committed to a variety of causes with creative and courageous, but also provocative and contentious, actions. In 1973, for example, he organised the first protest for the rights of homosexuals in a country of the "Eastern Bloc" at the World Youth Festival. Peter Tatchell was a leading member of the "Gay Liberation Front" and the activist group "OutRage!" and denounced human rights violations worldwide with sensational campaigns.
The event is dedicated to Peter Tatchell's life's work and presents examples of his work. The documentary film "Hating Peter Tatchell" (directed by Christopher Amos), produced by Elton John, will be presented for the first time in Chemnitz, bringing the activist's lifelong struggle to the big screen with an astonishing selection of rare archive footage and moving interviews.
An in-depth discussion with Peter Tatchell will accompany the film screening.
The event is part of our annual project "Zeitgeschichte(n). Towards the Present of the Past".
The project is funded by the Local Action Plan for Democracy, Tolerance and a Cosmopolitan Chemnitz and by the federal programme "Live Democracy!".

Exhibition: "90 years of Emil Helbig arts and crafts carvings"

The company "Kunstgewerbliche Schnitzereien Emil Helbig" is the oldest carving workshop still in existence in the Ore Mountains. For more than 90 years, unique works of art have been created in this small flat carving workshop.
The exhibition shows a selection of the unmistakable figures created in this workshop. It also provides an insight into the eventful history of the company.

We will get to know this unique mix of board game, storytelling and improv theatre without much prior knowledge. There are no limits to your imagination when role-playing with pen, paper and dice. Don't be afraid of daunting rules, but good communication is the be-all and end-all here. This can be practised well with lots of small, beginner-friendly role-playing games and other communication games.
More experienced people will find like-minded people and can try their hand at one-shot adventures in various systems.

Christian Steyer reads Christmas stories by Erich Kästner, Heinrich Böll, Janosch, Barbara Robinson and Jürgen B. Hausmann and accompanies himself on the piano.
Steyer is known from over 50 film and television productions including "Die Legende von Paul und Paula" and "Für die Liebe noch zu mager". He has composed music for numerous films and radio plays, taught at the Hochschule für Musik and the "Ernst Busch" drama school, worked as a choirmaster and lives as a freelance actor, composer and pianist in Berlin.
