When you open an old fairytale book and tell the story of Sleeping Beauty, strange things sometimes happen. For example, monsters may have nested in the book or even a whole gummy bear-eating gang of monsters. Can these monsters at least prevent Sleeping Beauty from sleeping for 100 years? Of course not, because they only make mischief. But they can help find a good prince and teach him how to kiss so that he can kiss the princess awake. And perhaps they are necessary for everything to end well.

Stefan Heym's Chemnitz relatives and the persecution of Jews during the Nazi era A search for clues

Emigrated, deceased, gassed - with these brief remarks, Stefan Heym outlines the later fate of his uncles and aunts, cousins and cousins in the Third Reich in his autobiography "Nachruf" (Obituary).

To mark the 85th anniversary of the pogroms of November 1938, Petra Seedorff and Michael Müller trace the lives and fates of Heym's relatives who once lived in Chemnitz. Some of them managed to leave Germany in time, others perished in the Holocaust.

Moderated by Ulrike Brummert, Uwe Hastreiter, Margit Mothes / Music by Peter Piek The longing for peace spans the entire world. And yet, wars have been waged throughout human history. The Russian war of aggression, which has been raging in horror and destruction in Ukraine since 24 February 2022, is plunging people into injury, illness, suffering and death. Specifically at the theatre of war. In general, in bewilderment at the usurpation of power and the mutilation of humanity. What can be done? A war cannot be ended by ignoring it. The aggressor imposes his rules of violence and forces you to fight back if you don't want to give up. A terrible dilemma. Very real and present in the here and now of 2023.

And yet, wars are not natural disasters, wars are man-made. Everything man-made can also be stopped again. This is the reason for confidence in all dialectics.

Sehnsucht_Frieden I & II presented texts and songs for reflection and hope, pieces from the time of the Thirty Years' War to the present day. On Saturday, 11 November 2023, Armistice Day after the First World War, we invite you all to bring your own texts and read them aloud. The order of reading will be determined by lot. No pre-booking required. Maximum reading time seven minutes.

We will get to know this unique mix of board game, storytelling and improv theatre without much prior knowledge. There are no limits to your imagination when role-playing with pen, paper and dice. Don't be afraid of daunting rules, but good communication is the be-all and end-all. This can be practised well with lots of small, beginner-friendly role-playing games and other communication games.

After the guided tour through the Stefan Heym Forum with the working library of Stefan and Inge Heym, the documentary film "Abschied und Ankunft" by filmmaker Beate Kunath will be shown. The film documents the preparations for the transfer of the library from Heym's study in Berlin-Grünau to the Stefan Heym Forum in his native city of Chemnitz. Supplemented by numerous archive recordings from contemporary appearances and interviews with Stefan Heym, director Beate Kunath has succeeded in creating a sensitive double portrait that offers surprising new insights into Heym's life and literary work.

Grief has a bad image. Wrongly so! Grief is a process through which we learn to live with our losses. Susann Brückner and Caroline Kraft show how differently we grieve and debunk widespread misconceptions about what happens when a loved one dies. Because grief is not what it is made out to be. It has no rules, but it can be shaped. It hurts, but it is valuable. It's high time we started telling stories about grief: stark and tender, beautiful and angry, nasty, touching and surprising. We can only change the way society deals with grief by talking about it: finally.

The fastest carrier pigeon in Hüsum brings the post and a parcel. A very large one for all those present and you must not feed it under any circumstances. The parcel. Or shake it. But you can open it. You should even open it, because someone is crying inside. The parcel becomes a house and later even a castle. The story of Cinderella, who lives a sad life with her stepmother and stepsisters, emerges piece by piece. This can and should definitely be changed, with the help of the fastest carrier pigeons in the world, a red Vespa and you - the recipients of the parcel. A wonderfully colourful play with the means of puppet theatre and fantasy.

Marlen Hobrack "Schrödinger's Grrrl"

Marlen Hobrack tells the story of Mara Wolf - a school dropout in her early twenties, depressed and unemployed in Dresden. She fills her everyday life with Instagram, dating and online shopping. In a bar, Mara meets PR agent Hanno, who is impressed by her and her quirky white-trash appearance. He hires her for a party and persuades her to pretend to be a novelist. The novel was written by an old white man who, like Hanno and his editor, doesn't believe that it will sell under his name. The three men hatch a plan for a major literary success, which Mara agrees to. "Schrödinger's Grrrl" is a contemporary coming-of-age novel, an impostor-against-her-will study, a story about a young woman who can't find a place in society because she doesn't even believe she can claim one. But there are three heroines - her mother, her best friend Charis and her caseworker Mrs Kramer at the employment agency - who won't let her down.

Marlen Hobrack was born in Bautzen in 1986 and lives in Leipzig. She studied literature, cultural and media studies and then worked for a management consultancy. Since 2016, she has been writing full-time for various newspapers and magazines, including Freitag, taz, Die Zeit, Die Welt and Monopol. In 2022, her non-fiction book "Klassenbeste. How Origin Divides Our Society" was published by Hanser Berlin in 2022.

The Reading Advent series offers people a moment to pause and reflect in the often hectic pre-Christmas period. The events will be accompanied by music from pupils of the municipal music school.

The Chemnitz Reading Advent is a project organised by the Evangelical Forum and the City Library in cooperation with Radio T e. V. and the Municipal Music School.
