There are 22 very different comics to choose from: Fantasy, funny, action heroes, adventurous and marvellous.
In addition to well-known comic characters such as Spider-Man or the heroes from the funny paperback, there are many great insider tips: "Little Witch Mist", "Enola and the Fantastic Animals" and "Unico" are just a few of many new exciting characters. "The democratic Chemnitz reads!"
Location: Central Library, Culture & Countries area
Participation: free of charge
Members of the Chemnitz City Library Friends' Association are taking part in the campaign of the same name to commemorate the book burnings of 1933.
On 10 May 1933, the National Socialists' book burnings reached their climax: to the applause of tens of thousands, Nazi students publicly threw books and writings by unwelcome writers, artists and scientists into the fire. Much of the "beautiful" and humanist literature of the time was devoured by the flames.
On 10 May 2025, Chemnitz residents will commemorate these barbaric events by reading from "burnt" literature and courageous texts that stand up to hatred and exclusion and position themselves in favour of open, solidary and diverse coexistence. As in the past three years, Democratic Chemnitz will be reading from sunrise to sunset in a variety of voices and languages, at cultural and educational venues as well as in public spaces.

Contemporary witness evening with Ingrid Schreyer, Ahrenshoop
Venue: TIETZ, Stefan Heym Forum
Participation: 6 euros, reduced 3 euros
For decades, Stefan Heym had a close friendship with his fellow writer Wolfgang Schreyer (1927-2017), who lived in Ahrenshoop on the Baltic Sea. His wife Ingrid Schreyer recalls numerous encounters with Stefan Heym, cheerful moments on the Baltic Sea beach and intense discussions about the work and responsibility of literature in the GDR, the uprising of 17 June 1953 and the expatriation of Wolf Biermann in 1976. With humour and often in a conversational tone, she describes how she organised readings by opposition authors, how book censorship and Stasi surveillance made life and writing difficult - and how great literature was nevertheless created and published.

Book premiere of the Chemnitz Opera writing workshop
Location: TIETZ, event hall
Participation: free of charge, information at www.theater-chemnitz.de
The Chemnitz Opera Writing Workshop is not only based in Chemnitz, but also in the twin city of Łódź. What the writers in Germany and Poland have in common is that they draw from the autobiographical. The 34 participants process lived history, personal experiences and their respective views of our times. In this way, personalities and generations become tangible through literature. The results of the workshops, which took place over the course of a year, are now being presented to the public in book form. The premiere of the publication in Polish and German will take place simultaneously in Chemnitz and Łódź. Both groups are connected via a conference call. They have been in dialogue with each other for months about writing and life in each participant's home town. Since March 2025, they have been presenting their work on a reading tour through Poland and Germany.
The writing workshop is part of the Chemnitz Opera's Capital of Culture project "Rummelplatz". In cooperation with Chemnitz City Library, Chemnitz Adult Education Centre, Dom Literatury w Łodzi.
