Petra Pansch, "Charlottes Volkshaus"

The Volkshaus in Chemnitzer Zwickauer Straße (Haus Einheit) has a special significance for journalist Petra Pansch. Her great-grandparents lived here, her grandfather and mother were born here and she was also born in this traditional house. Her story is centred around the Volkshaus and Zwickauer Straße. The main character of this biographical historical novel is Charlotte. When she was born on 29 February 1904, everyone saw it as a good omen to hear her first cry on such a special day, which only occurs every four years. But life writes its own story, at a time when Chemnitz is flourishing economically and is known as the Golden Twenties.

Perception of crime and the image of offenders in Germany

Police-registered offences in Germany fell for many years, but rose again for the first time in 2022: more registered burglaries, more registered youth violence, more cybercrime. The fear of crime has always been high over the years, seemingly regardless of these figures. What is the connection between actual and perceived crime? And what other factors play a role in the fear of crime?
The Centre for Criminological Research Saxony (ZKFS) has conducted a Germany-wide study with more than 5,000 respondents on the perception of crime and criminals. From a criminological perspective, the perception of criminal offences, offenders and criminality is strongly influenced by threat perceptions, ideological and political attitudes and stereotypes. In addition, there are social factors that influence this perception, such as demographics, neighbourhood, social status and actual crime.
The exhibition presents the results of this study. It will be accompanied by two scientific lectures.

70 years ago, on 17 June 1953, tens of thousands of workers in the GDR rose up against the self-proclaimed workers' state. Having just returned from anti-fascist exile in the USA, Stefan Heym experienced the events in Berlin at close quarters.
And he wrote a novel about it, which was not allowed to be published in his own country and therefore provided material for all kinds of legends: "Der Tag X".
Finally published in West Germany in the mid-1970s under the title "5 Days in June" in a heavily revised version, the novel was to become one of Heym's best-known books. With the addition of authentic documents, it recounts the events surrounding 17 June 1953 from the perspective of those who were involved in and responsible for the events. The renaming of his hometown Chemnitz to Karl-Marx-Stadt, just a few weeks before the uprising, was also included in the plot.
A literary evening with Professor Bernadette Malinowski and Dr Christoph Grube from Chemnitz University of Technology and Michael Müller, board member of the International Stefan Heym Society.

Prof. Dr Frank Asbrock, Director of the Centre for Criminological Research Saxony and Professor of Social Psychology at Chemnitz University of Technology, will talk about the discrepancy between actual and perceived crime trends in Germany and Saxony. He will discuss the possibilities and limitations of crime statistics as well as the causes and consequences of the fear of crime, including the effects on trust in state institutions.

"Of pigeonholes and offenders - how stereotypes influence our perception"

In her lecture, Dr Deliah Bolesta, research associate at the ZKFS, will shed light on the role of stereotypes in the perception of crime and offenders. She will present the results of a study that looks at stereotypes about offenders in the general population. Various groups were identified that differ significantly in their perception of crime and offenders and that do not correspond to the characteristics of actual police-registered offenders in Germany.

All boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 16 who enjoy reading can become members of the city library's summer reading club. Hundreds of brand new thrillers, mystery and fantasy novels and topical stories about love and life are available to club members. Registration is free and uncomplicated.
Anyone who has finished three books by 19 August will receive a certificate and be invited to the closing party after the summer holidays.
The Saxon Book Summer is a summer holiday campaign organised by public libraries in the Free State of Saxony and the Saxon State Association of the German Library Association in cooperation with the State Ministry of Science, Culture and Tourism (SMWK) and the Chemnitz City Library Supporters Association.
This measure is co-financed by tax funds on the basis of the budget approved by the Saxon state parliament.
