In search of the new Jewish sound in Germany
"Richard Wagner and the Klezmer Band" - book presentation with Yuriy Gurzhy

Moderated by Chris Münster
Venue: TIETZ, Central Library, Event Hall
Admission: free of charge

The well-known DJ, musician, producer and author Yuriy Gurzhy is in search of the current Jewish sound in Germany. In his first book "Richard Wagner and the Klezmer Band", he is first and foremost a DJ, but instead of mixing music, he tells exciting and unusual stories. Together with Gurzhy, we embark on a journey with musicians and experts, from the smoky clubs of Berlin to the Frankfurt Festhalle.

Yuriy Gurzhy was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, and has lived in Berlin since 1995. Together with Wladimir Kaminer, he initiated the legendary Russendisko party series. In 2003, he founded the band RotFront. Gurzhy has also been involved in various theatre projects, including for the Studio Я of the Gorki Theatre Berlin and the Münchner Kammerspiele.

Documentary film (Germany/Canada 2004, 93 min) on the occasion of 80 years of D-Day
80 years ago, on 6 June 1944, Allied troops landed in Normandy and opened a second front against Hitler. They were followed shortly afterwards by units of the US Army for "psychological warfare". Their task: to investigate, unsettle and demoralise the enemy and persuade them to surrender without a fight. As graduates of special training programmes at Camp Ritchie, Maryland, they were known as the "Ritchie Boys". The companies consisted mainly of young Germans who had found a new home in America after fleeing from the Nazis. Among them were quite a few German Jews like Stefan Heym. The documentary film by Christian Bauer tells their story.

An event organised by the International Stefan Heym Society Chemnitz and the Days of Jewish Culture.
