Stefan Heym's novel "Ahasver" in a digital historical-critical edition

Lecture and project presentation

Venue: TIETZ, Stefan Heym Forum

Attendance: 3 euros, reduced rate 1.50 euros

Due to its intertextual references and its numerous contemporary allusions, for example to GDR conditions, Stefan Heym's novel "Ahasver", which is structured on three time levels, can no longer be fully understood by today's readers. Using the collections of material that Heym compiled for this novel, his preparatory work and his typescripts and manuscripts, literary scholars at Chemnitz University of Technology led by Professor Bernadette Malinowski, in cooperation with the Trier Centre for Digital Humanities, have succeeded in preparing a digital historical-critical and annotated edition and making it available to the public as a worldwide open access project.

The speaker for this evening is research associate Tobias Frank.

The project was funded by the German Research Foundation.

LESELUST reading: Reading and music performance with Jaroslav Rudiš and Hans Narva

Venue: Saxon Railway Museum

Attendance: 8 euros, pupils and students free of charge

Jaroslav Rudiš comes from a Czech family of railwaymen and prefers to travel to his performances as an author and musician by train. What's more, he has made this decelerated and now very contemporary form of transport the subject of his texts. In his books Gebrauchsanweisung fürs Zugreisen and Zug um Zug durch Europa, he not only presents the best dining cars, recommends the most beautiful night trains or reveals which station pub is a good place to while away the waiting time. The trained historian is also interested in what routes, trains and stops tell us about our shared history and present. And on his travels, he learns time and again how the international rail network holds Europe together.

Composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist Hans Narva proves that there is a lot of music in the beat of the points and perhaps even a little anarchy. Harmoniously embedded in the ambience of the railway museum, his performance enters into a dialogue with the texts by Jaroslav Rudiš.
