The Poet of the Night

Venue: TIETZ, Central Library, Event Hall
Admission: free

Wolfgang Hilbig portrayed by Michael Hametner: Wolfgang Hilbig would have been eighty years old on 31 August 2021. Hilbig, who comes from Meuselwitz near Leipzig, could have been a highly praised poet in the GDR, as he came from the working class as a stoker. Despite this, the GDR only allowed a single small volume of poetry and prose to be published in 1983. Hilbig's poetry had opened itself up to surrealism and symbolism, embraced modernism and showed great sympathy for Franz Kafka. A poet of world literature had come from the small Thuringian town of Meuselwitz. The literary critic and long-time radio broadcaster Michael Hametner (MDR-Kultur) follows in the footsteps of the writer Wolfgang Hilbig, who created a nocturnal world of coal and cellar light in which dream and reality merge incessantly in gentle or frantic, desperate images. Michael Hametner leads us on a mysterious textual journey through the labyrinths of the night. Pianist and composer Stephan König accompanies the journey on the piano.
