Exhibition: "What the school garden did for teaching."
From 19 January to 1 March 2017, the travelling exhibition will showcase the work and achievements of the reform pedagogue Friedrich Wilhelm Gerdes.

It was thanks to the teacher Friedrich Wilhelm Gerdes (1891-1978) that an experimental school project, which attracted a great deal of attention during the Weimar Republic, was established at the rural school in Victorbur (East Frisia). He set himself the goal of teaching his pupils holistically through practical, interdisciplinary topics found in the school garden. The schoolchildren were to learn through work and experience interrelationships. The activities in the garden served both educational and training objectives, which did not emphasise economic considerations. The school garden itself was a suitable teaching tool for reaching rural schoolchildren in their own environment and leaving the confines of the classroom.

The travelling exhibition was developed and designed by Klaus Reichmann at the Centre for Teacher Training at Chemnitz University of Technology at the Chair of Primary School Education. It essentially shows the possibilities that the school garden offered for a rural primary school in the Weimar Republic.

The library and counselling mobile for people with visual impairments on site at Chemnitz City Library

People who receive a diagnosis regarding their vision have many questions, fears and problems that cannot always be covered by medical care. Patients are faced with the task of reorganising their lives and adapting to their altered vision. The DZB counselling mobile provides free information about comprehensive help and advice on all topics related to eye disease.

The possibility of barrier-free access to literature and information contributes significantly to maintaining quality of life. The German Central Library for the Blind offers blind and visually impaired people a wide range of literature and information as well as access to this in the Chemnitz City Library.

Research paper consultation hour for pupils | every Tuesday from 3 to 6 pm

Read aloud: On quiet soles... Stories to listen to
read aloud for everyone with keen ears

When you are invited to the event "Auf leisen Sohlen..." in the city library, you have to be very quiet and prick up your ears, because the reading mentors come to visit and read out exciting stories. They take both young and older listeners into colourful fantasy worlds with great pleasure. The literature-loving readers read the latest children's books, classics, "bestsellers" from their own childhood or even texts they have written themselves in the atmospheric reading tent in the children's world.
Admission to the reading sessions is free.
