The 1960s: To escape military service, the two friends Burkhard Schlotheim and Josef Birnbaum begin studying education in Leipzig. Here they meet Anna, who is half French, and find a rival for their love in Carl Clausberger. After a summer trip to the Black Sea, there are only three of them left, but life goes on. They dream of Paris and live in the Oderbruch, Hinterlückenstein in the Erzgebirge and Berlin. The world is only open to them when the Wall falls, but it is already too late for Anna.

A great book about friendship, love and red wine and the absurd, futile and beautiful in a finite world.

"With my project 'Lauschangriffe. Mobile Soundstories', I would like to encourage the urban community of Chemnitz to tell their own - real or invented - stories that relate to an 'object', be it a neighbouring city, a building or a place in Chemnitz. The 'storytelling' can take a wide variety of forms - singing, dancing, writing, designing, remaining silent, photographing, composing," says Arna Aley, the first literature scholarship holder of the City of Chemnitz. Every Wednesday in February, she awaits storytellers from Chemnitz at the Stefan Heym Forum. Come along for a story!

Lothar Becker's lovingly grotesque novel is an ironic reckoning with ideologies and world views and the expectations of salvation associated with them.

Lothar Becker has published numerous stories and novels. Most recently, his novel "Bubble Gum 69", about a childhood in a small East German town, was published by Eulenspiegel Verlag in 2016. In 2006, he was one of the finalists in the MDR literature competition. He also writes and composes musicals. In 2007, he won the nationwide school musical competition with "Elec's Secret".

The film "Farewell and Arrival" documents the preparations for the transfer of the library from Heym's study in Berlin-Grünau to the Stefan Heym Forum in his native city of Chemnitz. Supplemented by numerous archive recordings from contemporary appearances and interviews with Stefan Heym, director Beate Kunath has succeeded in creating a sensitive portrait that offers surprising new insights into Heym's life and literary work.

An event organised by the International Stefan Heym Society.

"The magical tower of history" and other Chemnitz fairy tales

A brave girl and a squeaky duck are the heroes of the second Chemnitz fairytale book. The book is the result of the writing competition "Dein Chemnitz. Your fairy tale". Two of the three winning stories, "Der magische Geschichtenturm" by Hannah Schmuck and "Entenrennen mit ungeahnten Folgen" by Monique Brucke, will be read aloud by their creators themselves. As a bonus, last year's winner Veronika Ahnert will read her story "Benno and the Keeper of the Riddle".

The reading will be accompanied by music from pupils of the municipal music school.
