Writers in uniform: Stefan Heym's "Speeches to the enemy" 1944/45
Annotated reading
Venue: TIETZ, Stefan Heym Forum
Admission: 3 euros (reduced 1.50 euros)
Shortly after the publication of his first successful novel "Hostages", written in English, Stefan Heym was called up to serve in the U.S. Army. With the advance of the American troops, he returned to Germany for the first time 80 years ago - twelve years after his escape from the Nazis. In the months leading up to this, he wrote a large number of manuscripts for radio programmes that were broadcast by the Americans from Luxembourg far into Germany. Their aim: to persuade German soldiers and the German civilian population to end the war as quickly as possible. Heym published the works decades later in the anthology "Speeches to the Enemy".

Concert reading with Liv Heym
Venue: Theatre Chemnitz im Spinnbau, Altchemnitzer Straße 27
Admission: 16 euros
Stefan Heym's autobiography "Nachruf" and the music of his time are the focus of two concert readings with his granddaughter Liv Heym in spring and autumn in Chemnitz. Together with actor Christian Ruth and pianist and chansonnière Donia Berriri, the violinist will explore the question of the relevance of his biography for our understanding of ourselves and our times. "It is rare to have such a detailed autobiographical document at hand to answer this question as Nachruf, which the 75-year-old Heym presented in 1988," says Liv Heym. Not only in his literary work, but also as a journalist, editor, member of the army and in political office, the writer rubbed up against the historical developments of his time and repeatedly put his contemporary witness to the test, for almost a century.
