City cycling campaign starts with key handover
Invitation to the photo session: 5 September, 9 a.m., Moritzhof forecourt
On Monday, 5 September at 9 am, Mayor Ralph Burghart will symbolically hand over his car key to the City Cycling Campaign team on the forecourt of the Moritzhof, Bahnhofstraße 53. This will also mark the start of this year's international cycling campaign organised by the Climate Alliance, which aims to cover as many journeys as possible by bike, on foot or by public transport for three weeks. People should leave their cars at home for the three weeks.
Representatives of the media are cordially invited to the photo session.
Anyone who lives, studies or works in Chemnitz can take part and collect kilometres from 5 to 25 September using the City Cycling app or the online portal. Local politicians are explicitly invited to take part. The aim is to promote cycling, personal health and climate protection locally.
Mayor Ralph Burghart is this year's "City Cycling Star". He hopes to see as many like-minded people as possible on their bikes: "Show that Chemnitz is a modern, dynamic and climate-friendly city." Prizes will be awarded in various categories among all participants at the end. Among other things, prizes will be awarded to the person with the most kilometres cycled, the team with the most total kilometres cycled and the most bicycle-active school.
During the campaign period, the City of Chemnitz offers all citizens free use of the RADar! reporting platform. On the website and via the City Cycling app, cyclists have the opportunity to draw the city's attention to annoying and dangerous spots on cycle paths. They simply place a pin on the digital road map and describe the danger spot. The responsible department in the administration will then be informed automatically.
Parallel to the campaign, a post about cycling in Chemnitz will be published at least once a week on the city cycling blog, ranging from short articles to video clips. MTB trial pro Hannes Herrmann, for example, shows what to pay particular attention to when wearing a cycle helmet. All articles are available at www.chemnitz.de/stadtradelnblog.
Last year, a total of 1660 Chemnitz residents cycled more than 326,000 kilometres during the City Cycling campaign, thus avoiding 48 tonnes of CO2 compared to driving a car. Detailed information on city cycling can be found here.
The city cycling event is part of the European Mobility Week, which takes place from 16 to 22 September. This is intended to inspire the residents of Chemnitz for alternative and sustainable methods of mobility(www.chemnitz.de/emw).
