CITY CYCLING 2022 successfully completed
Most active cyclists, daycare centres and schools receive awards
2,181 people from Chemnitz took part in the CITY CYCLING campaign, which ended on 25 September. Additional entries were still possible until 2 October, and now the results are known:
A total of 337,978 kilometres were cycled during the three weeks of the campaign, saving 52 tonnes of CO2. In comparison: last year, 1678 cyclists cycled a total of 326,033 kilometres, saving 48 tonnes of CO2 (compared to driving a car).
This puts Chemnitz in third place out of a total of ten participating municipalities in Saxony. In a nationwide comparison, Chemnitz is also among the leaders, in 165th place out of a total of 2472 participating municipalities.
The main aim of the CITY CYCLING competition is to encourage as many people as possible to switch to cycling in their everyday lives, thereby contributing to climate protection and the promotion of cycling while also doing something for their own health. "In our view, the campaign can contribute in the long term to inspiring people in Chemnitz to switch to cycling permanently, even beyond the campaign period," says Carina Kühnel, Acting Head of the Environmental Agency. "In this way, cycling can make an effective contribution to achieving the CO2 reduction targets."
In three weeks alone, the emission of 52 tonnes of CO2 was prevented. Transferred to a whole year, that would be an immense effect for climate protection, as road traffic is currently the third largest CO2 emitter in Chemnitz. For comparison: in 2019, 1.3 tonnes of CO2 were emitted per capita.
Ranking within Chemnitz
The city of Chemnitz took part in the international cycling campaign for the second time this year. The patron of the campaign this year was Ralph Burghart. "As Mayor for Personnel and Finance, I am of course particularly pleased that the city administration team is setting a good example and took first place in CITY CYCLING this year with 25,001 kilometres. But what is particularly great is that the overall number of participants in Chemnitz has increased significantly. This shows that cycling is an important means of transport for all age groups."
Second and third place this year went to two grammar schools: Georgius-Agricola-Gymnasium with 19,884 kilometres and Johannes-Kepler-Gymnasium with 17,181 kilometres. The best daycare centre this year was again the Wiesenstraße daycare centre with 2,411 kilometres. The number of participating daycare centres and schools has increased from 15 last year to 26 this year.

On Friday, 11 November 2022, the winners will be honoured at the annual event of AG Gesundes Chemnitz.
The City of Chemnitz will also dedicate a tree to each winning team.
RADar reporting platform!
The RADar! reporting platform gave cyclists the opportunity to draw attention to annoying and dangerous spots on the cycle path during the campaign period. The city of Chemnitz activated this function for the first time this year to find out how the tool is used and to test the quality and further processing of the reports. More than 450 RADar! reports were received during the three-week campaign period. The most common complaint was about traffic management: For example, participants reported accident blackspots, unsafe road crossings or suggested opening one-way streets and bus lanes for cyclists. The comments are now being analysed and incorporated into existing work processes and planning by the Civil Engineering Department.
CITY CYCLING will be organised again next year.
