City councillors and media visit major urban construction sites
City councillors and the media took the opportunity this afternoon to find out about the progress of construction work on the city's two largest current construction sites - the stadium on Gellertstraße and the special education centre, the Chemnitz school for the physically disabled.
Stadium on Gellertstraße
The stadium on Gellertstraße is currently being remodelled while the league continues to operate. Now that the north and south stands, including the roof, have been structurally completed, the bucket seats are currently being installed in the north stand so that this stand can also be gradually taken over by visiting and home fans. The partial demolition of the west stand is also imminent. Last week, Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig and Kay-Uwe Panzer, project manager of the general contractor BAM, also informed the Planning, Construction and Environment Committee about the current status of the construction project, which is costing around €25 million (see also press release no. 520).
School for the physically disabled
Following the topping-out ceremony in July, the structural work on all parts of the new special education centre/school for the physically disabled in Chemnitz at the Heinrich-Schütz-Straße site has now been completed. The construction of the outdoor area has begun. The extension of the sports hall and the boarding school have made further progress.
The carpentry work is currently underway, while the façades with the large areas of glazing are being closed and the roofing work is being carried out. The thermal insulation composite system is also being applied to the façades. The aim is to ensure that the structural shell is tight and complete before the winter so that work can be carried out inside the school building over the winter. This primarily concerns the interior work, which should be completed in the spring.
The aim is to complete all parts of the building in May/June 2015 so that the move can take place during the summer holidays. A total of 32.6 million euros will be invested in the extensive construction project. The Free State is subsidising the construction with a total of 14.8 million euros. The city of Chemnitz itself is investing 17.8 million euros.
In addition to the school, the large-scale project includes a two-court sports hall with outdoor facilities, a residential home, all-day care for children and young people with physical and multiple disabilities as well as therapy rooms with a therapy swimming pool and gymnastics room. A total of 230 pupils with physical disabilities can look forward to over 250 new barrier-free rooms for learning, playing and living on an area totalling 13,650 m².
