City council provides additional funds for daycare centre refurbishment
With the confirmation of draft resolution no. B-235/2018, the city council today (Wednesday) approved an over-budget allocation of 609,000 euros for the complete refurbishment of the daycare centre at Sonnenstraße 42, which will be operated by the Caritasverband für Chemnitz und Umgebung e.V. in the future. It is a prefabricated building that was operated as a day care centre until the early 1990s and then closed. It later housed the district library and a youth leisure centre. Since 2010, the building has served as an alternative location for daycare centres.
The current increasing demand for daycare places in Chemnitz led to the decision to reactivate the building as a daycare centre.
The complete refurbishment of the prefabricated building - which is owned by the city of Chemnitz - has been calculated at a total cost of around 2.36 million euros. The additional requirement of 609,000 euros that has now been approved is due to the fact that the renovation project was delayed: in 2015, the city of Chemnitz applied to the SAB for an assessment of eligibility for funding from the ERDF "Sustainable Urban Development" programme. The comprehensive reviews by SIB and SAB were completed in 2017. After the implementation planning was drawn up in 2015 on the basis of city council resolution B-176/2015, construction has been underway since January 2018 (B-111/2016). A public tender for the construction work and the awarding of the individual lots has now begun. Construction is proceeding according to plan.
However, as the construction price index has now risen nationwide and unforeseeable additional expenses have arisen as a result, the city applied to the Free State for an increase in funding of around 466,000 euros on 25 April 2018. The SAB's decision on approval is still pending.
Caritas - as the future operator of the daycare centre - is contributing 101,000 euros to the building renovation itself.
The operator's educational concept includes a healthy, wholesome diet for the children in its care. The installation of a cooking kitchen instead of just a serving kitchen increased the construction costs by around 104,000 euros. The cost increase is due, for example, to the larger kitchen floor plan as well as the necessary power connections and ventilation requirements.
