City Council elects new Mayor of Department 5
At its meeting today, the City Council elected Mr Ralph Burghart as Mayor for Department 5 (Education, Youth, Social Affairs, Culture and Sport). A total of five women and eight men stood for election.
"Department 5 is the largest department in our city administration, and many challenges await Mr Burghart here. I look forward to working successfully with him for our city," said Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig.
The 48-year-old business graduate has worked in various areas of the Federal Employment Agency since 2003. He is currently a member of the management board of the Chemnitz regional directorate and is responsible for the management and control of the personnel department, strategic orientation and cooperation with leading municipal organisations at state level.
Ralph Burghart completed his studies in economics and organisational sciences with a focus on "Business Administration in Public Administration" at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich in 1998. He then worked as a company commander and youth officer in the Bundeswehr until 2003.
Ralph Burghart has been involved in voluntary work since 2009, initially as an expert resident on the administration and finance committee, and from 2014 as a member of Chemnitz City Council. In this role, he is also involved in the supervisory board of the municipal theatres.
"I am delighted with the trust that the city councillors have placed in me with their election and look forward to an exciting new role. It is important to me that the administration and city council work together to find solutions for the benefit of our city, even when opinions differ," says Ralph Burghart.
