City Council elects new Mayor of Department 1
At its meeting today, the City Council elected Ralph Burghart as Mayor for Department 1 (Personnel, Finance and Organisation). Seven candidates stood for election, three of whom presented themselves at today's City Council meeting.
Lord Mayor Sven Schulze: "I already know and appreciate Mr Burghart as a fellow mayor and am delighted that he is taking over from me as treasurer. Many new challenges await him in Department 1 - especially in such difficult pandemic times. I look forward to a good and successful collaboration with him for our city."
Ralph Burghart was appointed Head of Department 5 (Education, Youth, Social Affairs, Culture and Sport) on 1 October 2018. The 51-year-old business graduate studied economics and organisational sciences with a focus on business administration in public administration at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich and at Arizona State University in Phoenix, USA. After various positions as an officer in the German Armed Forces, he joined the Federal Labour Agency in 2003 and held several management positions there. Among other things, he was Chairman of the Management Board of the Altenburg-Gera Employment Agency and a member of the Management Board of the Saxony Regional Directorate. Here, he was responsible for Human Resources, Controlling and Finance until the end of September 2018.
Mayor Ralph Burghart: "My move to the chair of Finance Mayor is an opportunity for me to help keep Chemnitz on a good financial course in a difficult time for my city. The tasks in Department 1 are challenging and I am happy to take on these issues. I would like to thank the city councillors for their trust."
