City council decides to renovate Zietenstrasse

At its meeting today, Chemnitz City Council decided to renovate Zietenstraße between Augustusburgerstraße and Sonnenstraße as a coordinated construction project with the waste disposal company of the city of Chemnitz (ESC) and eins/inetz.

In this first construction phase, inetz/eins and ESC will be renewing the district heating pipes, gas and water pipes, electrical installations including the city lighting and the sewer on Zietenstraße. The carriageway and the sides of the road will be almost completely dug up for these complex pipe installations. The road will therefore be completely renewed by the City of Chemnitz over a length of approx. 290 metres. The ESC is coordinating the entire project.

The road is planned with a standard width of six metres so that two buses can pass each other. A two-metre-wide parking lane will be created on both sides of the section. Individual pavement projections at the junctions with the side roads will make it easier for pedestrians to cross. Trees will be planted at intervals along the strip. The approximately three metre wide footpaths on both sides will be retained and will be completely rebuilt. Ecopaving will be used to protect the root areas in the areas of tree discs that are worth preserving.

The street lighting will also be renewed in this section. The existing signage will largely be retained or reinstalled. In addition, 16 new bicycle stands are planned along Zietenstraße, which will be reorganised at the junctions.

A new barrier-free bus stop will be built at the junction with Jakobstraße. The new school and day care centre on Jakobstraße will provide a new public transport connection. The ring bus line (Line 82) will stop at the new bus stop.

A new pedestrian crossing will be installed in the Jakobstraße area. Unsecured crossings will be rebuilt in order to increase road safety, especially for children (school route safety). This will require additional signage and lighting.

New road markings will be installed at the traffic light junction on Augustusburger Straße.

A construction period of 13 months is planned for the entire project. Construction is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2022 once the tendering process has been completed.

In order to minimise disruption for local residents, partial sections will be planned between the junctions. During construction, Zietenstraße will be closed in sections between Augustusburger Straße and Sonnenstraße.

In the first section, Clausstraße and Augustusburger Straße will be closed on one side. A diversion will be set up via Augustusburger Straße, Yorckstraße and Fürstenstraße.

The total cost of the project for the City of Chemnitz amounts to around 905,000 euros in own funds.
