City Council decides to realise the Schillerplatz intervention area
At its meeting today, the city council decided to upgrade Schillerplatz. The project is an important intervention area for Chemnitz as European Capital of Culture 2025.
The decision was taken to redesign the southern part of Schillerpark in line with the historical model. The large trees are to be preserved, the existing paths with bitumen surfacing will be dismantled and the historical route from 1890 will be largely restored. The design of the central axis will be enhanced by a 5.80 metre wide walkway paved with basalt mosaic paving. The existing avenue of lime trees will be supplemented with new plantings.
The inner areas will remain as spacious lawns. In conjunction with the varied tree population and the existing or additional shrub planting in the peripheral areas, the aim is to create a peaceful and sheltered park character.
The costs for the project amount to around 2 million euros, of which around 1.3 million euros can be covered by subsidies.
