City council decides to realise the intervention area of the former river baths
At its meeting today, the city council decided to upgrade the former river pool in the southern part of Chemnitz City Park. The project is an important intervention area for Chemnitz as European Capital of Culture 2025.
The construction of paths and open spaces in the southern city park and on Schulstraße as well as the construction of a new pedestrian bridge over the Chemnitz were approved.
As part of the "City by the River" Capital of Culture project, the leisure and recreational potential in the area of the former river baths is to be increased. To this end, new paths are being created on both sides of the Chemnitz and the area is being upgraded in terms of garden architecture.
The new pedestrian bridge will also improve accessibility to the southern city park.
The outdoor facilities include a dynamic "Flussness" sports area for young and old to the east of the Chemnitz. An asphalt path is ideal for inline skating, scooter or balance bike riding, and there are various sports and play facilities in the bays along the path.
In the city park to the west of the Chemnitz, a "Windwasser-Luftbad" will be built, visible from afar: This involves 15 wooden flagpoles with typical bathing equipment and native river animals depicted on the tops. Four wave-shaped wooden decks invite visitors to sunbathe and relax by the Chemnitz. Shade trees will also be planted.
Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2024, with completion expected in December 2024.
The total costs amount to around 2.38 million euros. The measure is being financed by federal and state funds, which will be paid out to the city of Chemnitz in a lump sum until 2025 on the basis of the agreement on the joint financing of the "European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025" by the federal and state governments.
