At its meeting today, the city council decided that the city of Chemnitz will purchase the school site at Wielandstraße 4. The property includes a three-storey listed school building and three garages.
The purchase price is 2 million euros. The seller is Fortbildungszentrum Chemnitz gGmbH. Ownership will be transferred on 1 October 2025 so that renovation work can begin this year.
The purchase will create the basis for the continued use of the site as a secondary school. It will also provide urgently needed space for additional classes.
The background to this is the updated school network planning, which shows an increasing need for capacity in the grammar school sector up to the 2027/2028 school year. From the coming school year, enrolments in the grammar school sector will already significantly exceed the forecast volume of pupils.
The building on Wielandstraße was previously used temporarily by the Karl-Schmidt-Rottluff-Gymnasium and the Berufliches Schulzentrum für Wirtschaft II. Both schools left the site at the end of the 2024/2025 school year. From the 2026/2027 school year, the building will be used exclusively for grammar school education.
The City of Chemnitz will carry out the necessary renovations in the 2025/2026 school year so that the premises are available for school operations in good time.
