At its meeting today, the Chemnitz City Council updated the daycare needs plan and decided to further reduce capacities for daycare centres, early intervention facilities, after-school care facilities for children from special schools and child daycare until 2027/2028.
Due to declining birth rates and changes in the utilisation of childcare places, the supply levels up to 2030 were adjusted in line with demand: A coverage rate of 48 per cent was set for crèche-age children and 87 per cent for kindergarten-age children. To achieve these coverage rates, a further reduction of around 330 childcare places in the crèche sector and around 700 places in the kindergarten sector is planned. From February 2026, talks will be held on a socio-spatial basis to coordinate the closure or merging of daycare centres across all providers.
The daycare centre requirements plan is reviewed and updated annually and is the central management tool for ensuring that childcare is in line with demand. It is based on the most recently approved capacities as well as current population and demand trends. The aim remains the realisation of the legal entitlement to education, upbringing and care for children in crèches, kindergartens and after-school care centres.
