City council decides to extend the SOP subsidised area for Brühl - conditions created for energy efficiency measures

Yesterday, the city council approved the extension of the "Brühl Boulevard" development area in the "Active Urban and District Centres (SOP)" urban development programme. Together with Chemnitz University of Technology, ein eins energie in sachsen GmbH und Co KG has drawn up an energy neighbourhood concept for Brühl, which envisages the large-scale use of renewable energies and the construction of a low-temperature district heating network. The concept is being subsidised as a pilot project by the city of Chemnitz, the federal government and the Free State of Saxony. Extensive funding from the SOP urban development programme has also been promised for its implementation.

Extensive investments are planned up to 2018 in connection with the urban development and energy-efficient refurbishment. A total of around 7 million euros is to be invested. Solar thermal systems, even in combination with other heating energy sources, have not been profitable to date. However, they are ecological and significantly reduce CO² emissions in the urban climate. These measures are particularly suitable for achieving the climate targets to which the city of Chemnitz has also committed itself and are therefore currently being subsidised as pilot projects throughout Germany. Homeowners are advised by the city's SOP officer and the one on the energy-efficient refurbishment of their buildings and the connection of modern building technology to the efficient district heating network.

The expansion of the subsidised area is necessary to ensure the eligibility of energy-related measures. In the Brühl neighbourhood, the existing district heating network is to be converted and significantly expanded using a proportion of locally generated renewable energy from solar thermal energy. The expansion will also include the neighbourhoods up to Müllerstrasse. In addition, energy efficiency is to be increased by storing solar heat and utilising the hot water return from the district heating network. The study of variants for the location and design of the solar thermal field should be completed by the middle of the year. The existing Chemnitz Valley cycle path at the technical facilities of eins energie in sachsen will be upgraded as a riverside park from the Georgbrücke bridge onwards to accompany the energy projects.
