City council decides to extend the climate protection programme

At its meeting today, the City Council adopted the Energy Policy Work Programme (EAP) and the Climate Adaptation Programme (KAP) until 2020. These measures serve to implement the Integrated Climate Protection Programme, which was adopted by the City Council in 2012 and contributes to energy-efficient and climate-friendly urban development. The EAP is also part of the certification process for the European Energy Award, in which the City of Chemnitz successfully participates.

Energy Policy Work Programme (EAP)

The EAP serves to concretise, update and implement the integrated climate protection concept. It contains specific climate protection measures that are implemented with municipal subsidiaries, scientific institutions and private companies. New projects in addition to those already underway include, for example Consumption control through intelligent heat meters in the fibre optic network and smart grid house connection stations ("smart meters"), construction of a wood-fired combined heat and power plant in Chemnitz-Siegmar, installation of a pilot plant for the recovery of heat energy from drinking water networksrme energy from drinking water networks, construction of a turbine in the Leipziger Straße elevated reservoir to generate energy from hydropower and a photovoltaic system on the roof of the Walter-Ranft-Straße daycare centre.


Climate Adaptation Programme (KAP)

By participating in the eea-plus pilot programme, the City of Chemnitz has committed itself to continuing the climate adaptation process. The climate team transferred existing climate adaptation measures (e.g. from the Climate Change and Climate Impacts sub-report, Energy Policy Work Programme (EAP), SeKo) into the present Climate Adaptation Programme (KAP). New measures include the planting of the railway tracks in the Luther Quarter to increase the proportion of greenery relevant to the urban climate, the raising of transformer stations to ensure security of supply in the event of flooding and the planting of tree species appropriate to the location and climate.
