City council decides to change the school districts for municipal primary schools
At its meeting today, the city council decided to redistribute the school districts of the municipal primary schools. The new school districts for first-year pupils from the 2018/19 school year will be defined in a corresponding statute. These school districts are the basis for the annual enrolment of pupils for Year 1.
The previous 14 school districts with two to five primary schools in the city of Chemnitz will be merged into nine school districts with two to seven primary schools. This will change the allocation of the school district and the catchment area of a primary school for individual primary schools.

Within these joint school districts, there is a right of choice for the enrolment of new pupils. First-year pupils are accepted by a primary school in the relevant school district.
For the Chemnitz school model/primary school and the support schools for integration, the territory of the city of Chemnitz is considered the school district.
The general procedure for school enrolment remains the same. The head teacher decides on school admission; in the joint school district, the head teacher makes the decision in agreement with the Saxon Education Agency. The overall enrolment capacity of the primary schools, the schooling of siblings and possible routes to school are taken into account.
The provision of sufficient school places is an essential duty of the City of Chemnitz as the school authority for the Free State of Saxony. According to the Saxon Education Act, primary schools are assigned to school districts and pupils generally have to attend the school in whose district they live. Each municipal primary school is assigned a catchment area. Accordingly, a corresponding place is provided for each pupil in a primary school in the common school district.
With the change in the school district adopted by the city of Chemnitz, existing place capacities can be utilised to compensate for the shortfall forecast at various schools over the next ten years.
