At its meeting today, the City Council of Chemnitz approved the construction of the new two-court sports hall in the Grüna district. This means that the City of Chemnitz can realise the project as planned. The basis for this is the funding decision issued by the Free State of Saxony on 5 June 2025, with which the financing of the measure is secured.
The new building will be constructed on the site of the Baumgarten primary school in Grüna. A site study had shown that this location offers the best conditions for future-oriented sports utilisation.
The new sports hall will be used by both pupils and sports clubs and will offer space for up to 199 visitors. Modern sports areas are planned for handball, basketball, volleyball and football, among others. A barrier-free design for the entire complex is part of the planning: this includes a wheelchair-accessible stair lift to the schoolyard as well as barrier-free sanitary facilities and changing rooms.
The hall fulfils all requirements for modern school and club sports. A new outdoor sports facility - including short-distance running tracks, a long jump facility and a streetball pitch - will replace the existing sports facilities, which will be covered by the new building. The existing tree population is to be preserved as far as possible, and any felling required will be compensated for by replacement planting.
The project also sets modern and sustainable energy standards: A photovoltaic system will be installed on the roof of the hall, and green roof areas are also planned for the functional areas. In future, heat will be supplied by a pellet heating system.
An efficient ventilation system with heat recovery will ensure a pleasant indoor climate while keeping energy consumption low.
A total of 8.6 million euros is available for the project. Around €4 million of this comes from subsidies, while the City of Chemnitz is contributing around €4.6 million.
Construction work is scheduled to begin in April 2026 and is expected to be completed in March 2028. The project is scheduled to end in August 2028.
The new building will provide the Grüna district and neighbouring districts with a modern, high-performance sports infrastructure that will strengthen school operations, support club sports and create new opportunities for sporting competitions. The city of Chemnitz is thus realising a component of the gymnasium and sports hall concept (B-064/2020) and at the same time implementing an important project to promote exercise, encounters and a sustainable infrastructure.
