At its meeting today, Chemnitz City Council decided to build the next section of the Wüstenbrand - Küchwald premium cycle path. Specifically, this involves construction section 2.0 from Röhrsdorfer Straße in Grüna to Riedstraße in the district of Rabenstein, which connects to the existing premium cycle path in a westerly direction.
The new section is 2.425 kilometres long and includes the renovation of the bridge at Forsthaus Grüna over Rabensteiner Straße as well as the three listed natural stone vaulted bridges over Schaftreiberweg, Weigandstraße and Riedstraße.
The rails and sleepers have already been removed along the entire section of the planned cycle path. The asphalt cannot be laid directly on the existing railway ballast with its failing grain. As a base for the asphalt layers, the railway ballast is mixed with fine grain on site and laid and compacted in the same place as a base course.
The total construction costs for this section amount to almost 7 million euros, and funding totalling 5.8 million euros has been applied for from the Free State of Bavaria. The favourable technical opinion and thus an essential prerequisite for funding has already been received. In addition to the approval of funding, the adoption of the 2025/26 budget statutes is also a prerequisite for construction, which should ideally begin in August 2025 and last until October 2026.
With the realisation of the overall measure, the south-west, north and ring routes of the city of Chemnitz's cycle network will be connected to the planned cycle path. The creation of the cycle path, which is independent of other traffic and largely free of crossings, will create a safe and attractive centre-west connection for cyclists.
