City council decides on new daycare centre buildings
At its meeting today, the city council decided to build new daycare centres, which should be ready for occupancy by autumn 2018. The continuing high birth rate, the good labour market situation, the influx of families with children and people with a migration background are increasing the demand for childcare places. The city of Chemnitz is responding to this by creating additional places in the city centre and in the Glösa-Draisdorf and Furth districts.
To finance the two new buildings, funds are being used that were originally earmarked in the current budget for the renovation of the speed skating rink and the extension of the indoor swimming pool in the Sportforum as well as for the renovation of the Michaelstraße daycare centre. These funds will not be required in full for the time being, as the construction work can essentially only be carried out from 2019. In order to ensure that the measures planned in the 2017/2018 budget can still be realised, the necessary funds will be made available again from 2019. All three construction measures are thus financially secured.
Background:
An additional daycare centre with 100 places will be built in the city centre exclusively for the care of crèche children (under 3 years). Locations on Rembrandtstraße/Zschopauer Straße (city centre district) and Mittelstraße/Leipziger Straße (Schloßchemnitz district) are being examined for this purpose.
The construction of the day care centre in the Glösa-Draisdorf and Furth districts will increase capacity from 90 to 100 places, with the Schulberg (Glösa-Draisdorf district) and Chemnitztalstraße/Further Trift (Furth district) sites being examined. The total cost of the two new buildings is estimated at 8.0 million euros.
