City council decides on further construction work at the Stadtwirtschaft

House A is being renovated for low-threshold use and a catering facility is being built

At its meeting today, the city council approved further construction work for the "Stadtwirtschaft" creative centre on Schüffnerstraße. These include the refurbishment of House A and the construction of a new canteen. The total costs are calculated at just under 4.9 million euros. This includes a cost risk due to rising construction prices. The total costs include urban development funding from the Free State of Bavaria totalling around 2.6 million euros.

The site was used as a building yard by the city cleaning company until 1997. House A housed changing rooms, sanitary facilities and a warehouse. It is in a structurally poor condition and was built in brick construction and partly in pure timber construction. The wooden windows are single-glazed and the roof is not insulated.

In order to give the neighbourhood an additional quality of stay, a gastronomic facility is to be created as a neighbourhood canteen. This is planned for the site of building complexes 5 and 6, which have to be demolished due to their poor state of repair. This new building is to take on the function of a distribution building and neighbourhood meeting point. Without a full kitchen, the catering will be geared towards a simple café operation with drinks and cakes on offer as well as delivered lunch options.

The entire area is to be developed into a place for encounters, art and culture, education and as a creative production site, thus establishing it as a creative quarter with the function of a district centre for the Sonnenberg. The project is an intervention area for the city of Chemnitz as European Capital of Culture 2025.
