City council decides on extensive refurbishment of Gebrüder Grimm primary school

At its meeting today, the city council decided to renovate the interior and refurbish the school and after-school care areas of the listed Gebrüder Grimm primary school on Kaßberg.

The planned interior refurbishment includes the classrooms and after-school care rooms, the main staircase, the foyer and the sports hall. In addition to the refurbishment of the rooms, accessibility on the ground floor and the room acoustics are to be improved. The sanitary facilities in the school and after-school care centre building and the building services will also be renovated. Measures for sun protection and shading are planned.
In addition, the installation of a photovoltaic system on the roof of the after-school care centre building is planned in order to improve sustainability and energy efficiency. The use of renewable energies will reduce the CO2 footprint and improve the energy efficiency of the building.

Furthermore, a green classroom, the construction of 44 bicycle parking spaces and a car parking space for the disabled in the schoolyard are planned. The necessary after-school areas will be redesigned, with some defective groundwater and drainage pipes being replaced.

Once the refurbishment is complete, the school will have all the rooms required for a three-form entry primary school, an adequate multi-purpose room and a larger dining hall.

The refurbishment of the sports facilities could not be included in the current project due to the amount of funds available. A thorough refurbishment is also planned here in the future.

The total budget amounts to around 13 million euros, of which 6.3 million euros will be made available as funding by the Free State of Saxony.
Construction work on the interior is scheduled to start in July 2025 and is expected to last until the end of 2027. The school and after-school care centre areas will be completed by June 2028.
