City council decides on construction measures

At its meeting today, Chemnitz City Council confirmed the construction decisions for the following measures, subject to the adoption of the budget statutes for 2016:

Road construction measures

- Expansion of Wilhelm-Busch-Straße between Zschopauer Straße "alt" and Kleinolbersdorfer Straße (2nd construction phase), total costs: €565,000
This measure is intended to organise and improve traffic conditions. This is to be achieved, among other things, through a structural and visual separation between the carriageway and footpath areas.
In connection with the construction work, the waste disposal company of the city of Chemnitz and eins energie in Sachsen GmbH Co. KG will be laying further pipes beyond the construction limits of Wilhem-Busch-Straße. This will involve laying new pipes (wastewater and rainwater sewers, drinking water and gas pipes in sections) in Kleinolbersdorfer Straße in the direction of the existing rainwater retention basin, both in the street and in the car park area there.
The project is scheduled to be realised from mid-March 2016 to the end of June 2017.
In accordance with the framework agreement on coordinated construction measures between the City of Chemnitz, the ESC and eins energie in Sachsen GmbH Co. KG, the supply and disposal companies will share in the construction costs of the carriageway.

- Renewal of the roads at Wilhelm-Külz-Platz, total costs: 272,800 euros
W.-Külz-Platz and the neighbouring streets/residential areas are located in the formally designated Brühl-Nord redevelopment area. The mostly poor condition of the carriageways and pavements is to be renewed. At the same time, adjustments will be made to the changed parking space situation. This will improve the overall street design. Construction is scheduled to begin in April 2016. The construction period is eight weeks.

- Wittgensdorfer Straße between Auerswalder Straße and Paul-Fischer-Weg, total costs: 374,769 euros
The main part of the construction project is the carriageway renewal.
The construction section is characterised by severe cracks, patches and deep ruts. Furthermore, the waste disposal company of the city of Chemnitz (ESC) is to renovate the existing combined sewer and inetz GmbH is to replace the existing drinking water and gas pipes.
In some areas, the pavements will be refurbished.
Another part of the project is the barrier-free extension of the "Körperbehindertenschule" bus stop. Construction is scheduled to begin in April 2016. The overall duration of the construction work is estimated at around seven months.

- Rabenstein Nature Theatre - securing the road "Am Naturtheater",
Total costs: 500,000 euros
The Civil Engineering Department of the City of Chemnitz is planning the renewal and slope-side stabilisation of the road "Am Naturtheater" in the area of the rock domes over a length of approx. 35 m in Chemnitz-Rabenstein. The existing rock slope of the "Felsendome Rabenstein" natural theatre and visitor mine is unstable. The road traffic system on the uphill side no longer fulfils the traffic requirements in terms of durability and road safety.
As part of the slope stabilisation, the road "Am Naturtheater" is to be fundamentally extended over a length of approx. 145 m from the junction with Kreisigstraße to the slope stabilisation to be newly constructed. The construction of a new collector is necessary for the drainage of the road. It is estimated that the construction work will take five months from mid-May 2016 to mid-October 2016.

Hydraulic engineering facilities

- Opening and new construction of the Eubaer Bach pipework to ensure flood drainage in the area of the Eubaer Str./Hauptstraße junction
Total costs: 500,000 euros
The Eubaer Bach crosses the intersection of Eubaer Straße/Hauptstraße in Chemnitz OT Euba in an approx. 98 m long pipework section. The structure is in a structurally dilapidated condition and is hydraulically under-dimensioned. As a result, the drainage of the Eubaer Bach is no longer guaranteed and poses a potential risk to the road area and downstream properties in the event of flooding.
The severely damaged pipework must be opened up and replaced in the road area of Eubaer Straße. The aim of the measure is to sustainably eliminate the damage.
The construction work begins with the necessary relocation of the current bus stop (Hauptstraße), which is located directly on the damaged pipework. The new bus stop will be relocated in the direction of Hauptstraße. The new location of the bus stop allows the watercourse to be opened up and leads to hydraulically improved drainage conditions in the Eubaer Bach. The new bus stop will be barrier-free. Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2016 and the entire project is expected to be completed in November 2016.
