City council decides on civil engineering measures

At its meeting today, the city council decided to implement the following road and civil engineering measures, subject to the approval of funding.

Lugau-Wüstenbrand cycle path, first section Chemnitz (Mittelbach)

The cycle path is intended to create an attractive connection in the south-western cycle network as a leisure cycle route. For the cycle and footpath coming from Lugau on the railway embankment of the former Lugau-Wüstenbrand railway line, the gap to the planned connection to the long-distance cycle route "Saxon City Route" (former Wüstenbrand-Küchwald railway line) is to be closed. The former railway line offers ideal conditions for this as an alternative route connection. The new cycle route is intended to promote tourism and improve road safety. The connection can be used as a school route and for other non-motorised traffic between Lugau and Mittelbach. It can also be used as a leisure cycle path.

The construction project covers a section of 1,327 metres up to the centre of Mittelbach. The usable width is 2.5 metres. Approximately 100 metres will be constructed under the leadership of the city of Chemnitz for Lugau and Jahnsdorf, for which a corresponding cost contribution was agreed.

The construction costs total around 570,000 euros; an application for funding in accordance with the "Municipal Road and Bridge Construction" guidelines has been submitted. This could result in a funding rate of between 80 and 90 per cent.

Construction is scheduled to start at the beginning of September 2017 and end at the end of October 2018.

Utilisation of the "Waisenstraße south side" public space

The derelict area around the new Technical Town Hall is being reorganised in terms of urban development. A new wide boulevard-style footpath with an average width of approx. 12 m at the front and approx. 10 to 11 m at the building will be created on Bahnhofstrasse from the city centre towards the station. A two-row tree avenue will be created in the first section. Plane trees with a trunk circumference of 18 to 20 cm will be planted. Additional lighting columns will be erected on the pavement.

This will provide a high-quality link between the Technical Town Hall and the city centre ring road and also enhance the design of the pedestrian link.

A barrier-free bus stop will be built in front of the building complex in the Bahnhofstraße area. Bahnhofstrasse will also be given a new crossing and traffic lights at the Waisenstrasse junction to defuse the accident blackspot. The area at Dresdner Straße 6-18 will also be connected.

The total costs are estimated at around 573,000 euros and will be funded entirely from the city's own resources. Construction work is scheduled to begin at the beginning of August 2017 and is expected to last until the beginning of February 2018.

Renewal of Kopernikusstraße between Keplerstraße and the bridge over the railway line

The section of Kopernikusstraße in the Siegmar district between Keplerstraße/Bürgelstraße and the bridge over the railway line will be renewed over a length of 430 metres. This is being coordinated with complex pipeline construction work on the combined sewer and on gas and water pipes by inetz GmbH and ESC.

The road will have a width of 5.50 metres and 4.50 metres in the area of trees worthy of preservation.

A one-sided parking lane 2 m wide will be created along the entire stretch, interrupted by individual footpath projections to allow pedestrians to cross the carriageway safely.

The eastern pavement will be largely retained, while the western pavement will be resurfaced with concrete paving to a width of 1.50 metres. Root bridges will be installed to protect the root areas of the trees worthy of preservation.

There are no plans to change the route or traffic characteristics. The existing signage will be largely retained or reinstalled. New markings will be applied to the parking lane.

The total construction costs are estimated at around 646,000 euros; no funding is planned. The construction work is scheduled to last from mid-August 2017 to the end of October 2018. In order to minimise disruption, the work is planned to be carried out in three construction phases.

Expansion of Zwickauer Straße, second construction phase from house no. 130 up to and including the Lützowstraße junction

With the construction of the stormwater overflow basin at the Zwickauer Straße/Lützowstraße junction, it became necessary to renovate the combined sewer network underneath Zwickauer Straße. The sewer renewal extended along Zwickauer Straße from the Kappler Drehe junction to the Schillstraße junction. In the course of this, Zwickauer Straße is being rehabilitated. The project was divided into three sections. The first section between Kappler Drehe and house no. 130 was already completed last summer. Now the refurbishment is being carried out from the Lützowstraße junction to house no. 130 as a coordinated construction measure in coordination with the city's waste disposal company (ESC). The third section between Schillstraße and Lützowstraße still has to be agreed with the ESC in terms of a coordinated approach.

Zwickauer Straße will receive a new frost protection and asphalt layer. The same applies to Lützowstraße between Zwickauer Straße and Voigtstraße. At the same time, the pavement in these areas will be repaved and a new traffic light system will be installed.

The proportionate road construction costs for the city of Chemnitz amount to around 500,000 euros; the construction work as a whole is expected to last until the beginning of 2018. The diversion route will be announced and signposted in good time.

Brühl North: Boulevard between Elisenstrasse and Zöllnerstrasse

The section between the junctions has a length of approx. 100 metres and is to be created for mixed traffic. The measure includes paving at the exit to Zöllnerstraße, restoration of the fountain operation (on one side), upgrading and opening of the platform to Brühl (stepless access to the ground floor) and the creation of the traffic organisation for opening as a mixed traffic area.

Some of the fountain installations will be dismantled, ramps to the entrance areas on the boulevard will be rebuilt, planting areas will be redesigned, the Brühl luminaires will be upgraded to provide the necessary illumination of the traffic area, new bollards will be installed, seating elements will be created and additional benches will be erected.

The total costs amount to around 404,000 euros, including around 135,000 euros in funding. Construction is scheduled to begin in September 2017 and end in June 2018.

Expansion of the Stollberger Straße/Neukirchner Straße/Friedrich-Viertel-Straße junction

The construction of a small roundabout (diameter 34 metres) is intended to significantly improve efficiency in the area in question and eliminate the long waiting times for drivers turning off from side streets, for example. The barrier-free bus stops will be built on the main road at the approaches to the roundabout. They will be built as kerbside bus stops. Cycle traffic will be taken into account in accordance with the cycle traffic concept and routed onto the carriageway in front of the roundabout and along it inside the roundabout.

A new pavement will also be created. In Friedrich-Viertel-Straße, the existing footpaths will be renewed and adapted to the extension.

During the construction period, Neukirchner Straße and Friedrich-Viertel-Straße will be fully closed to traffic. Traffic on Stollberger Straße will be reduced to one lane and regulated by traffic lights. The diversion for the closure of Neukirchner Straße is to be set up via Stollberger Straße/Südring/Neefestraße/Jagdschänkenstraße.

The housing estate on Friedrich-Viertel-Straße can be reached via Wolgograder Allee/Max-Opitz-Straße.

The costs amount to 847,000 euros; an application for funding in accordance with the "Municipal Road and Bridge Construction" guideline has been submitted. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-September 2017. Including a two-month winter break, the project should be completed by the end of July 2018.
