City council decides on civil engineering measures

At its meeting today, the City Council approved the following civil engineering measures.

Reconstruction of Gablenzplatz
At Gablenzplatz, the two junctions Augustusburger Straße/Yorckstraße and Augustusburger Straße/Geibelstraße are to be converted into mini roundabouts. The conversion will improve traffic safety and the efficiency of the two junctions. It will also provide safer guidance for pedestrians, particularly in terms of school route safety. Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2019 and last until May 2020. The total costs for the remodelling of Gablenzplatz, including road construction, renewal of the lighting and the redesign of the entire square, amount to around 2.3 million euros. Of this, 1.62 million euros in funding is planned.

The two junctions of Yorckstraße and Geibelstraße will be converted into mini roundabouts and the traffic lights will be removed. Pedestrian crossings are planned in the branches of the roundabouts to ensure safe guidance for pedestrians and the route in the green area of Gablenzplatz will be reorganised to include the pedestrian crossings. The entire Gablenzplatz will be made barrier-free for pedestrians. The green areas will be redesigned while largely preserving the large trees in order to increase the quality of life on Gablenzplatz. In Adelsbergstraße, the bus stop will be made barrier-free. The tram crossing at Geibelstraße will be secured with traffic lights in accordance with regulations. At the same time, the crossing of Geibelstraße and the tram tracks for cyclists on Adelsbergstraße will be reorganised.

Construction will be carried out in four phases, each with different traffic routing. The two roundabouts will be built in separate construction phases with full road closures. Diversions will be signposted and a temporary carriageway created to keep traffic flowing in the direction of Augustusburg.
Residents will be informed about the complex construction work and the expected traffic disruptions by Mayor Michael Stötzer at a public event on 22 November. You will receive a separate invitation to this event.

Techno-Campus South Planstrasse C
A new industrial estate covering approx. 23 hectares is to be built in Altchemnitz. A legally binding development plan has already been adopted for this. A road with supply lines is to be built as part of this development. Medium-voltage and communication cables and a street lighting system are to be installed by inetz GmbH. The construction of drinking water, gas and district heating pipes is also planned. In addition, Entsorgungsbetrieb Chemnitz (ESC) will lay a combined sewer in the street. Deutsche Telekom intends to connect the area with communication lines.

The planned road has a length of 550 metres and is to be connected to Fraunhofer Strasse in the south-west and to the existing planned road B in the north.

The 9.50 metre wide road will have a 2.30 metre wide pavement. There are parking spaces for 17 lorries and 74 cars at the edge of the road. A construction period of 14 months is planned for the coordinated construction project. Construction is scheduled to start in June 2019. The construction costs from the city's own funds amount to 831,000 euros.

Lessingstraße between Hainstraße and Lessingplatz
Lessingstraße is to be widened in this area. In addition, the landward bus stop on Hainstraße immediately after the Lessingstraße junction will be renovated to make it barrier-free. The involvement of the waste disposal company (ESC), which is renewing the combined sewer by laying a new open trench on the existing route, means that this is a coordinated construction project. The planned extension is intended to meet the requirements of motor vehicle traffic and ensure continuity with the neighbouring road sections that have already been renovated.
The measure involves two sections: Lessingstraße from Hainstraße to Lessingplatz and Lessingplatz to the junction with Reinhardtstraße.
In addition to restoring a stable, level and safe road surface, the following measures will be implemented: barrier-free expansion of the pavements with tactile surfaces along the main access points, reorganisation of public parking spaces, renewal of the drainage facilities and design continuity with the already renovated side streets. Work is scheduled to begin in June 2019 and last until the end of July 2020. The construction costs amount to 656,500 euros, of which 377,000 euros are subsidised.

Walter-Klippel-Straße between Augustusburger- and Eubaer Straße
There are safety deficits in this area due to the lack of a pavement. The drainage is also inadequate. A carriageway width of five metres will be created over the approximately one kilometre. The pavement width varies between 1.8 and 2.3 metres. In addition, retaining walls of up to 20 metres in length are to be built in the area of the two new barrier-free bus stops on the field side. . The entire media supply and disposal system (ESC, inetz, cable provider) will be renewed or newly installed. Unfortunately, a large-scale diversion cannot be avoided. Taking into account the outstanding land acquisition, the construction work is scheduled to start at the beginning of March 2019 and be completed in December 2020. The total costs amount to approx. 2.89 million euros.

Lugau-Wüstenbrand cycle path
The section on the former railway embankment from Gewerbeallee Mittelbach to the town boundary is to be completed. The 917 metre section to be planned between Gewerbeallee with the route over the existing Hofer Straße bridge structure to the end of Mittelbach has a minimum width of 2.5 metres. The measure includes all services required to divide cyclist and pedestrian traffic while maintaining or compensating for the developed flora and fauna. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-February 2019. A construction period of ten months is planned. The construction costs amount to around 748,000 euros, of which 648,000 euros are subsidies.

Scheffelstraße
Scheffelstrasse is to be renewed over a length of 745 metres between Helbersdorfer Strasse and Stollberger Strasse. The measure also includes the barrier-free conversion of the bus stops "Paul-Bertz-Straße" and "Helbersdorfer Straße" (only in the direction of Annaberger Straße). The "Helbersdorfer Straße" bus stop in the direction of Stollberger Straße was already converted to be barrier-free in 2013. Over a length of around 530 metres, starting at Helbersdorfer Straße, the combined sewer will be renewed on behalf of the ESC as part of the coordinated construction project and the branched old network will be decommissioned. The pavement will only be renewed in a few short sections.
The costs amount to 532,000 euros, which will be borne by the city of Chemnitz. The construction work is scheduled to start at the beginning of June 2019 and be completed by the end of December 2019. Information on any necessary diversions will be provided in good time.
