City council decides on Beyerstrasse construction project
At its meeting yesterday, Chemnitz City Council approved the coordinated Beyerstrasse construction project in the section from Limbacher Strasse to Paul-Jäkel-Strasse.
In addition to the necessary road construction, the bridge structure over which Beyerstrasse runs will also be renewed and adapted to the current flood protection requirements. The construction work will be coordinated with eins energie, i.e. the drinking water and gas pipes in the area from Matthesstrasse to Paul-Jäkel-Strasse will also be renewed and a new protective pipe route for communication cables will be built.
Beyerstrasse leads over a bridge structure under which the Pleißenbach flows. The structure, which dates back to 1888, has significant longitudinal and transverse cracks on the underside of the arch and the ends. The damage impairs its long-term stability. The road surface in this section also shows considerable damage due to the long time it has been in place.
The work will be carried out over a total length of approx. 230 metres. The carriageway will be widened from 9.0 to 9.75 metres in order to improve the road's performance and increase road safety. The western pavement will be reduced for this purpose. For the future cycle path that crosses Beyerstrasse at Matthesstrasse, a corresponding cycle traffic facility will be built.
The total costs amount to approx. 1.1 million euros. The entire construction project will take around twelve months and will be carried out under full road closure. It will begin with the bridge construction this year.
The diversion route to the Flemming area and Chemnitz Hospital will be via Fritz-Matschke-Straße and Paul-Jäkel-Straße. Extensive bridge and civil engineering work was also carried out on Fritz-Matschke-Straße from August 2020 to May 2021 in order to prepare the diversion route for the construction of Beyerstrasse.
