City Council continues climate protection programme for the city
At its meeting today, the City Council approved the update of the City of Chemnitz's integrated climate protection programme from 2012. It forms the framework for action until 2040 for the municipal strategies and projects in the area of climate protection and climate adaptation and brings together the various building blocks into a coherent overall strategy.
Particularly in light of the special report published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in October 2018, which describes that the global climate is now moving above the temperature fluctuations of the Holocene, a reorientation of municipal climate protection goals, strategies and plans was required.
The update of the Integrated Climate Protection Programme for the City of Chemnitz primarily contains packages of measures to be implemented in the medium and long term with which greenhouse gas emissions are to be significantly reduced as quickly as possible. It is based on an ongoing process that has now been fleshed out in four energy policy work programmes and a climate adaptation programme. The Climate Adaptation Programme was also updated with the resolution.
Key objectives relate to the fields of energy and mobility, which are responsible for the majority of greenhouse gas emissions. These targets are supplemented by resolutions on the introduction of controlling instruments and the establishment of networks. The focus of climate adaptation is on people, nature and infrastructure. With the planned coal phase-out by 2023, the accelerated expansion of renewable energies and the course set in the transport sector, the Integrated Climate Protection Programme presents a reduction of 75 per cent by 2030 compared to 1990 as realistic.
