City council confirms in-depth square concept Sonnenberg North/Karree 72

Chemnitz City Council today approved the in-depth square concept in the Sonnenberg Nord/Karree 72 area. The square is bordered by Zietenstraße, Heinrich-Schütz-Straße, Gellertstraße and Reinhardtstraße. It represents the continuation of the development objectives in the area and is thus confirmed as part of the integrated action plan for the ERDF/ESF subsidised area.

Including the existing buildings and the existing "Heidelberg" allotment site, the area is to be developed as a green square with a variety of uses. Green corridors are to be extended and open spaces upgraded and existing wasteland cleared. Development for residential purposes is not being pursued, with the exception of a possible development on Reinhardtstrasse.

Various measures are planned to upgrade this area, for the most part within the current funding period, which runs until 2020.

The planned measures include

  • The "Heidelberg" allotment garden site is to be shown as a permanent allotment garden site in the land utilisation plan. The site itself is to be restructured in the long term, and a central car park and a new access road are to be created (2019/20). An expansion of the allotment site is possible in the future.
  • The transition between Heinrich-Schütz-Straße and the allotment site is to be redesigned and given a square-like character. (2018 to 2020)
  • Construction of a permaculture educational garden. The facility is aimed at schools, kindergartens and interested citizens (2017/18). There are also plans to make an area available for the creation of community gardens (2019/20).
  • Greening Reinhardtstraße: Plans include planting trees and reorganising the street space. (2019)
  • The Zietenstraße/Gellertstraße junction area is to be remodelled in the future (after 2020). The aim is to improve traffic routing/pedestrian crossings. Zietenstraße will then also be given a row of trees.
  • Clearing or securing unused, overgrown plots of land. This is intended to improve safety in the square (2017/18). The former cold store including outbuildings and car park as well as the former garages in the southern planning area are also to be demolished (2019/20 in each case).
  • If required, a new residential building (GGG) can be constructed on Reinhardtstraße.

Urban development funding from the urban redevelopment programme and the ERDF programme as well as the city's own funds required in each case are available for the projects. The realisation of the concept depends on the interaction between the various owners in the square. Existing conflicts of interest still need to be resolved by mutual agreement.
