City council confirms concept for environmental centre
At its meeting yesterday, Chemnitz City Council confirmed the concept of the Environmental Centre. It provides information on the tasks, objectives and organisational structures of the Environmental Centre and presents future development steps.
The concept focuses on the planned relocation of the Environmental Centre from Henriettenstraße 5 and the Technical Town Hall to another building. Strong synergy effects are expected from this move. The associations and employees at the environmental centre should be able to cooperate more closely and effectively as a result. Coordinated opening hours should enable the associations to offer a joint service at the environmental centre on certain days. Meetings of the Agenda Advisory Board will also be held at the new centre.
The planned move will provide citizens with a central point of contact. Furthermore, the opening hours of the environmental library will be better guaranteed by bringing the staff together, even in the event of substitutions. A revised website is intended to increase the attractiveness of the environmental centre and the environmental advice service by telephone is to be supplemented by themed events in future.
The planned relocation of the environmental centre is necessary because the current location at Henriettenstraße 5 is in serious need of renovation.
The City of Chemnitz employs two people at the Environmental Centre, whose tasks are in the field of Local Agenda 21 and in the areas of education, advice and the environmental library. They coordinate the Agenda 21 working groups, inform the members of the Agenda Advisory Board about how to fulfil their duty to participate in public matters, prepare the content of the Agenda Advisory Board meetings, organise the GEO Day of Biodiversity (Long Day of Urban Nature), organise the annualThe members also organise the annual AGENDA Forum, sit on the jury for the Environment and Peace Prize and support the European Neighbourhood Day on the Sonnenberg as well as initiatives during European Mobility Week.
The city is also involved in the Environmental Centre in the organisation of the Environmental Library, the telephone advice service for citizens on environmental issues and in the organisation of the Education Market for Sustainability, environmental education events and the Chemnitz Education Network for Sustainability.
The following associations and initiatives are also active in the Environmental Centre: Amnesty International, Green League, ADFC and Saxon Refugee Council, Kulturbüro Sachsen, Fahrradselbsthilfewerkstatt and Trägerverein Umweltzentrum as tenants and users: in addition to the Agenda21 working groups (AG Ökologie, AK Energietisch, AG Mobilität, AG Wertewandel-Tierschutz and AG Stadtkaffee/Faire Beschaffung) the
