City council approves extension to grammar school
At its meeting today, the city council decided to extend the existing Building II of the Karl-Schmidt-Rottluff-Gymnasium in the Kaßberg district. The new solid construction is intended to accommodate four classes and also reorganise the canteen and kitchen in the inner courtyard area.
The planned costs total 11.5 million euros, with the city of Chemnitz planning to contribute around 8.3 million euros.
The existing listed building will be extended on the first and first floors to the west with six new classrooms and two specialised classrooms plus preparation for the physics and chemistry departments. A larger canteen with a serving kitchen and the necessary ancillary rooms will be located on the ground floor of the existing inner courtyard.
The existing underground car park will be rebuilt in accordance with the current specifications for parking space sizes and the new structural requirements. This will be used for deliveries to the canteen.
The new building will have a floating appearance and can be undercut in the schoolyard.
A construction period of two and a half years is planned, with the start of preparatory work already scheduled for the 2023 winter holidays.
