City council approves contract for stage 4 of the Chemnitz model
At its meeting today, the city council approved the construction and financing contract for stage 4 of the Chemnitz model with the Central Saxony Transport Association (ZVMS), the Central Saxony Transport Association (VMS) and Chemnitzer Verkehrs-AG (CVAG) for the most important infrastructure project in Chemnitz in the coming years. In addition, the city council decided to conclude a contract with CVAG in order to compensate the city of Chemnitz for the benefits arising from the realisation of the project.
Among other things, the construction and financing contract describes the type and scope of the project, defines the responsibilities of the project partners, regulates the billing procedure and the responsibilities for the infrastructure.
Stage 4 of the Chemnitz model includes the expansion of the Chemnitz - Limbach-Oberfrohna line and is the next step in the transfer-free connection between the Chemnitz regional centre and the surrounding area by linking tram and railway tracks. As a large part of the line has to be newly built, stage 4 is the most extensive of all the expansion stages of the Chemnitz model to date. The route is planned via Brückenstrasse and Theaterstrasse, Hartmannstrasse, along Leipziger Strasse to the Chemnitz Centre and on to Limbach-Oberfrohna. In the area between Bornaer Straße and the Chemnitz Centre, the route is still being finalised with further planning.
For the planning approval section Falkeplatz - Theaterstraße - Brückenstraße - Hartmannstraße alone, estimated investment costs of around 92.7 million euros are currently expected by 2028/2029. The project is being funded by the Federal Republic of Germany and the Free State of Saxony with funds from the Municipal Transport Financing Act (GVFG), whereby funding of up to 90 per cent of the eligible costs is possible.
