City council approves construction project at Jan Amos Comenius primary school
At its meeting today, the Chemnitz City Council approved the short-term extension of the
3rd floor of the Jan Amos Comenius primary school. Unscheduled funds totalling around 640,000 euros will be made available for this.
The 3rd floor is currently unused. By refurbishing this floor, the existing space can be fully utilised for school purposes and - in accordance with the partial school network plan for primary schools - can accommodate three primary school classes.
Jan Amos Comenius Primary School forms a joint school district with Annenschule GS, Heinrich-Heine GS, Gablenzer GS, Rudolfschule GS and Adelsberger GS.
During the refurbishment of Heinrich Heine Primary School from the 2018/19 school year, some of the classes will be moved to Jan Amos Comenius Primary School. The extension of the 3rd floor of Jan Amos Comenius Primary School must therefore be completed by then.
Type and scope of the construction work
The 3rd floor is currently in the shell construction stage. The main part of the project is to refurbish the rooms and create toilet facilities.
The load-bearing capacity of the ceilings was checked, with the result that a light ceiling structure made of dry screed will be installed as on the other floors. Furthermore, the ceilings will be fitted with fire protection panelling and, in the classrooms, additional acoustic plaster. The rooms will be fitted with new doors. The building services installations will also be completely refurbished. The colour scheme of the corridors will be the same as on the other floors. As the number of pupils increases, the second entrance will be needed as the second main entrance to the cloakrooms. An additional cloakroom will also be built in the stairwell area.
As school operations are to be maintained, the stairwell cannot be closed for the construction work. Part of the roof will be opened up to allow the company access via a stair tower with an appropriate enclosure. Furthermore, the 2nd floor must be temporarily emptied. However, this can be done without any problems due to the available space.
Construction work will begin at the end of November 2017 and should be completed by mid-July 2017. The costs amount to a total of 723,000 euros. Around 83,000 euros have already been made available to ensure the necessary planning lead time.
