City council approves concept for information steles
First information pillars to be erected for the town's 875th anniversary
The Chemnitz City Council today approved a concept for the gradual installation of modern information steles in Chemnitz city centre. Five steles are to be installed by the anniversary of the 875th anniversary of the first mention of the city of Chemnitz in 2018. At least ten more will follow later.
After reunification, Chemnitz city centre was able and forced to change more than almost any other city in Germany. The city centre has been completely restructured over the past 20 years. The city council had commissioned the administration to highlight this unique selling point of Chemnitz city centre by means of historical information steles. They are intended to describe the past of certain squares, places or street sections in Chemnitz city centre.
The city centre does not yet have a standardised information system. Various projects and initiatives have already set thematic priorities. When analysing the location of the new steles, it is therefore examined to what extent a spatial proximity to existing elements can be established in order to refer to each other or encourage further reading.
A study of the different options leads to the recommendation to develop a new, modern system for the planned steles. New artistic ideas are to be incorporated into the stele design via a competition. If possible, interactive elements or audio or even video files should be integrated. The content of the plaques is to be developed with historians and the city archives. An agency will then take over the design and propose a suitable system.
The costs for the first steles are estimated at 59,000 euros. If sponsors wish to participate in the project, they will be involved.
