City council approves concept for castle pond island

The city council today approved a utilisation concept for the Schloßteichinsel. Following the renovation of the traditional castle pond pavilion, it is to be revitalised for cultural events and thus firmly anchored in Chemnitz's cultural life.

The castle pond and its island are one of Chemnitz residents' favourite recreational destinations all year round - primarily for walks, but gondola rides and the playground are also very popular. In addition, the area has been and continues to be used for a range of events, including music events and other alternative events.

The concept includes

  • The castle pond pavilion is to be increasingly used as a cabaret theatre in future. The aim behind this is to primarily offer fine art and entertainment programmes without the "big event character" that fit in with the ambience of the island. The music pavilion should play a central role and complement the programme of the nearby Küchwaldbühne. In order to bring events to the Schloßteichinsel with a high degree of continuity, active advertising for the venue and the coordination of the various uses by a park manager are necessary.
  • The large playground on the island is one of the most popular playgrounds in the city precisely because of its location. It needs to be completely renovated in the medium term. Corresponding funds will be included in the next double budget for 2019/20.
  • Community barbecues have become established in major European cities in recent years. This is also becoming increasingly popular on the Schloßteichinsel.
  • The aim is also to utilise the area of the Schloßteichinsel and the pavilion more for smaller private celebrations with up to 50 people and to create the appropriate conditions for this.

The natural stone paving on the fairground in front of the stage is therefore to be partially relaid and repointed this year.

As the area is becoming more and more frequented, the concept provides for more frequent cleaning. From May to September, there will therefore be at least three to seven cleanings and waste bin emptying sessions per week. The corresponding contracts have been awarded for 2018.

The use of the island as a barbecue area must be scrutinised, at least in its current form and with regard to times of use, as it is becoming apparent that the entire island will be regarded as a barbecue area. It therefore seems sensible to erect paved barbecue areas or fixed barbecues (two locations) in order to achieve a clear demarcation of the park design. Coordination with the monument protection authority is still necessary for this.

It is also being examined whether a mobile toilet facility and a small kitchen for events or a permanent structural solution in a building can be realised. However, this is not possible in the pavilion itself due to lack of space. The economic viability of connecting the island to the water and wastewater network must be scrutinised. Alternatively, mobile kitchens and sanitary facilities would be conceivable.
