City council appoints medical officer
The Chemnitz City Council yesterday confirmed Dr Harald Uerlings (photo) as medical officer of the City of Chemnitz from 1 February 2014 in the non-public part of the meeting. The current medical officer and head of the health department, Dr Liebhard Monzer, is retiring at his own request.
Dr Harald Uerlings, born in 1958, completed his medical studies at the Medical University of Volgograd in 1984. He received his licence to practise medicine in 1984 and state recognition as a specialist in forensic medicine in 1988. From 1984 to 2008, Dr Uerlings worked as a medical staff member at the Karl-Marx-Stadt District Institute for Forensic Medicine, in the meantime the Department of Forensic Medicine at the Saxony State Institute for Health and Veterinary Investigation, now the Chemnitz branch of the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the University of Leipzig. Dr Uerlings began his specialist medical work at the City of Chemnitz Health Department in 2008 in the area of help for the mentally ill and addicts in the Health Education, Counselling and Support Department. He has been head of this department since 2009.
In addition to his actual work at the health department, Dr Harald Uerlings is also involved in the state working group for hospices, the Otto-Perl Foundation for Disabled People's Self-Help in Saxony, child protection and victim support projects, the City of Chemnitz Crime Prevention Council and the Chemnitz Dementia Working Group.
