City council adopts retail and centre concept
Chemnitz City Council approved the current retail and centre concept for the city of Chemnitz at its meeting yesterday. The previous concept from 2016 was updated. The urban development concept will be taken into account in particular when drawing up urban land-use plans.
According to this concept, the spatially defined central service areas (A, C and D centres) are to be preserved and developed as areas worthy of urban development protection. In addition, the designated privileged local supply locations are confirmed as existing urban development-integrated locations for local basic supply.
The city centre is considered an A centre, C centres are district centres (e.g. Ermafa-Passage, New-Yorck-Center, Gablenz-Center) and D centres are local supply centres (e.g. Adelsberger Zeile, Rabenstein-Center, Brühl). The amendment proposed by the Einsiedel local council was also taken into account.
The so-called "Chemnitz List" divides retail product ranges into those relevant to local supply (e.g. food and luxury goods, drugstore goods, cut flowers), those relevant to centres (e.g. consumer electronics, clothing, household goods, toys) and those not relevant to centres (e.g. home furniture, wallpaper, tools).
In order to do justice to the dynamics of change in the retail sector, the retail and centre concept is updated at intervals of around five years and reviewed at regular intervals to ensure that it is up to date and effective.
