City Council adopts plant list for Chemnitz
At its meeting today, the City Council decided to draw up a plant list for use in construction planning. This is to take into account upcoming climate changes and stronger synergies between fauna and flora. The plants listed, which have been extended to include green roofs and façades, are intended to improve urbanity.
In the case of development plans, the respective planner, developer or property owner can select species and refer to the binding plant list.
The woody plant species to be listed are compiled according to certain aspects:
- The effects of climate change are taken into account by including woody plants that are tolerant of heat and drought stress.
- Preference is given to woody species that have a positive effect on biodiversity, i.e. that are important for nectar-seeking insect species and that offer nesting opportunities or food for birds.
- The trees should also be less susceptible to fungal diseases and other pest infestations.
- Fruit trees are also listed.
- Poisonous plants or plants that are hosts for pests and diseases are not listed.
Species lists are also compiled for green roofs and façades.
The information sheet "Native trees and shrubs in the Chemnitz area - recommendations and tips for the use of native trees and shrubs" from the Lower Nature Conservation Authority serves as the basis for the plant list.
The plant list was compiled in co-operation between the City Planning Office, the Environmental Agency and the Parks Department.
